Um, yeah. Why commute when as senior engineer you can dictate terms. If only there were a large tech workers union.

    I think Toyota was right all along.

    It’s an unpopular opinion among EV purists, but I think hybrids will reduce a lot more carbon emissions than BEVs, for the simple reason that way more people can switch. Even without access to charging outlets, hybrids are far more efficient thanks to their regenerative braking. With access to outlets, they are as good as EVs within their electric range, which will account for most of the daily commutes of their owners, and all with far smaller batteries and better costs of ownership than BEVs.

    The way to eliminate emissions due to personal transportation is not to put people in BEVs. It’s to eliminate commutes and massively invest in (electrified) public transportation.

    @drahardja the same argument could be made about going flexitarian vs vegan. As a society we really need to stop encouraging all or nothing fixes.

    @schwa “our data shows that most people don’t have outside outlets” was the excuse the product manager gave me just before we shipped the outdoor IQ Cam. I already had a failed preproduction unit of the first outdoor camera at that point. I left the company shortly after for many similar reasons.

    New: Oregon's gov has signed the strongest right to repair law ever passed, which forbids Apple's "parts pairing" regime for iPhones. this is a v big deal

    @404mediaco @frozencanuck As someone who relies on parts pairing for security, I hope Apple doesn’t remove that feature everywhere. Can’t have hardware based encryption if the parts in the data path aren’t paired. Huge step backwards.

    I have a few very small ideas for usability improvements to git. Been idly thinking about whether Wizard Zines could pay a developer to investigate and see if a couple of them are feasible

    in theory I could do this myself, but I have never written real C code in my life and I think I'm very unlikely to actually do it

    no idea what the probability of actually doing this is (maybe low? hiring developers is expensive!) but it's something I've been thinking about

    Dwk,
    @Dwk@mastodon.social avatar

    @b0rk can the improvements be demonstrated as a script on top of git? I’ve seen that work for proposals to improve other tools, most famously ECMAScript polyfills.

    @schwa over in the NPM world a good package, of which there are few, would have a separate wrapper package for the CLI version. Though that is mostly because tree shaking wasn’t a thing until recently.

    Compiled my main concern would be funky licenses like that I have to get legal to sign off on, even if they are not in the final build. (Also a bigger problem with NPM than SPM)

    Okay, up until last week I could say "Siri, kitchen light” and the light would toggle to the opposite of its current state, super handy. Now Siri just says “On or off?” Did I break something? Did Siri break? I've tried restarting the Apple TV hub and HomePod mini multiple times

    Dwk,
    @Dwk@mastodon.social avatar

    @christianselig The next step to living in a Star Trek future is getting Siri at least as accurate as Majel Barrett-Roddenberry when it comes to lighting control.

    I’m officially giving up on a “top 100 classic book of our time.” It’s boring. You don’t get to know the characters. All their names are basically the same. There aren’t enough paragraph breaks. And it both fetishizes and normalizes sexual assault. Should it be banned? Of course not. But I think we need to rethink what we consider “classic” and “extraordinary literature.” Just because English professors can find themes to dissect doesn’t make something great.

    Dwk,
    @Dwk@mastodon.social avatar

    @superbetsy Classic stories are the basis of new stories, told with modern dilemmas. What defines the classics as enduring is how often it is retold and re-spun. The ideas is what's important, not the exact words on a page. (though those can be thought provoking in-and-of themselves, see poetry)

    Don't seek out the quintessential hero's journey, seek out the as of yet unsung hero. That is where creativity flourishes to this day.

    Yes indeed. I’ve stopped listening to podcasts since I dropped the commute during lockdowns, and I haven’t missed it. Any time I see a podcast with an hour-plus play time, I think about the opportunity cost, and mostly I decide to not listen. Yes, I know 2x speed exists. No, I don’t want to. https://mastodon.social/@dangillmor/111128547550428360

    Dwk,
    @Dwk@mastodon.social avatar

    @drahardja My podcast listening has gone up as I now refuse to take meetings while walking the dogs or biking. About 10 hours a week at 2x speed. I’ve found podcasts to be the best use of those hours where both my eyes and hands are in use, but not so much my brain.

    Ah yes, this is a great way to turn “Can I see your driver’s license?” into “Can you hand me your unlocked phone so I can rifle through it?” at a traffic stop.

    Yes, it’s more convenient than having a separate card, and it may serve as a great backup in case your physical card is lost or damaged. But please don’t use this as your only driver’s license, especially if you are an often-targeted demographic.

    On macOS fn should bring up a dedicated Emoji picker and focus on a search field. Searching and selecting should be done with the keyboard and auto insert where the cursor is. Having to use the mouse keeps me from using as much Emoji as I would like. Or I should just update my Emoji Substitutions script https://gitlab.com/davidwkeith/emoji-substitutions

    @drahardja And only in certain text fields. I tried to put an emoji in a Calendar Event Title field, which needs to be copy/pasted from another text field since double click doesn’t work in that field. Filed FB12847469. This stuff should be simple. /rant
