Pailhead – “Don't Stand In Line” EP (1988)
7", 45 RPM on Wax Trax! Records

One of the more interesting collaborations, featuring Ian MacKaye, Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen, Ministry bassist Paul Barker, and drummer Eric Spicer from Naked Raygun.

Back of album sleeve. Blue and black design with lyrics for each song printed in white. Black 7" vinyl disc below

Black Flag – "Six Pack" (1981)
7" 45 RPM
Original SST pressing with black & white cover

This class punk anthem reminds me of the initial appeal I found in punk rock and underground music in general. Savage mockery of the worst parts of popular American culture, as it was at the time anyway.

Angry outsiders. The innately anti-authoritarian. These are my people!

Released 43 years ago this month, as @historyofpunkrock noted recently 👊

Hey folks! I’ve been radio silent the past few weeks for starting a brew job and vacation! However 3, 2, 1… Let’s Jam round two! with the Cowboy Bebop Netflix Series by Yoko Kano and The Seatbelts. I couldn’t pass up new recordings of these songs. So good!

Beastie Boys – Paul's Boutique
First pressing on Beastie Boys Records, Jul 25, 1989
Gatefold album jacket

First purchased this on vinyl because I wanted the full vinyl packaging experience and didn’t have many gatefold jackets like this.

Then I got the CD for portability and eventually to digitize. These days, I listen to the remastered digital version. But this remains a top 5 album.

Unfolded gatefold showing the two inner panels. Another wide angle shot of 80s Brooklyn Below is album sleeve with a picture of the three band members as taken underwater and in oversaturated color effect

Lin and I are off today, but keeping a low profile in the house for maximum relaxation! 😀

We’re ‘A Song For All Seasons’, released in 1978 by Renaissance - their last great album before it all started to go south.

Minor Threat – Salad Days
7" on Dischord Records, 1985

I love every track on this EP!

This came with a 7"x28" folded one-sided insert with photos and lyrics, but I seem to have lost that. Not surprised. Pretty much on brand for me.

XTC – Mayor Of Simpleton (1989)
Limited Edition, 12” 45 RPM single on Virgin Records

Cool that they took a new single that I like and added 3 of my favorite XTC songs. Makes for a perfect 4 track album.

Various – More Coffee For The Politicians (Phoenix Underground Music Compilation #3)
Placebo Records, 1985

Regionally focused comps were super helpful back before the internet. Best way to focus on a specific scene.

This one has a nice variety of musical styles. It's #3 in a series from Placebo spotlighting the Phoenix Scene (e.g. "This Is Phoenix, Not The Circle Jerks" and "Amuck").

There's a white paper insert with some Placebo Records and their respective prices listed. It's an order form you'd mail in.

GARY NUMAN
The Pleasure Principle
1979 Canada pressing

Once I finished listening to the John Foxx record, I had to put this on.
Gary & John are two artists that are forever entwined for me.

The Pleasure Principle is one of the greatest albums of all time, regardless of genre or era, and NO I did not stutter.

Without Gary (and John as well), it’s hard to imagine a world that has Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, or Depeche Mode.
Just a legendary artist.

Some more - not as well known as Bridge of Sighs but still amazing. I can’t beleive I hadn’t heard of this guy before sometime in the last year…I have a lot of stuff to catch up on. Pretty sure I got this record from a dollar bin, and it’s in great shape. A good vacuum cleaning helped for sure.

Sun City Girls – “Sun City Girls” (1984)
First run pressing of 1000 copies on Placebo Records

Desert landscapes, weather, people, and culture are so unique. One of the quietest places on Earth, deserts tend to produce a lot of introspection. I assume this is why some of the weirdest and most creative art, particularly music, comes out of such regions.

I could never keep up with all the output from the Sun City Girls and the two brothers that constituted its core. But that’s ok. Their first two albums are so good, with both music and silly, clever lyrics.

Favorite track: “Uncle Jim”.

Kind of a must-have album, so I got it on white vinyl! 🤷‍♂️

THE WAR ON DRUGS
Lost In The Dream
2014 2xLP Worldwide pressing

Some outstanding early Thursday morning vibes with this one.

One of the greatest compliments you can pay ANY band is that you know it’s THEM when you hear them.

I still feel that this is their most fully realized record. Everything they do exceptionally well is on display here, and Adam Granduciel’s songwriting is at its apex.
Just stellar.

If you ever get a chance to see them live, do so.
Phenomenal.

TERENCE TRENT D’ARBY
Terence Trent D'Arby's Neither Fish Nor Flesh: A Soundtrack Of Love, Faith, Hope, And Destruction
1989 U.S. pressing

TTD had a massive ego, & fancied himself the second coming of Prince.
Trust me.
I met him.

The reality always was that he was a cheap dime store poor man’s version of Prince.
Only without the hits.

That being said, his 1st album was pretty decent. It even had a hit.

This one though?
👎
Terrible and pretentious.

Who is an artist for you where, when you hear them, regardless of song, album, whatever…
INSTANTLY makes you cringe and sends you into a fit of rage?

An artist or band where you’d rather slice your own ears off than ever hear them again.

Mine is easy.

What about you guys?

SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE
Diary
2017 U.S. 2xLP Ltd. Ed. Reissue

A monster album for me when I was in high school.
Being a total devotee of all things Sub Pop in the #90s , this one hit me in a way that none of the label’s other releases at the time.

I remember buying it on tape, & it taking me at least a week to get past the first 3 songs, because I kept rewinding it after Song For An Angel and playing those 3 over & over.

Amazing album that still holds up.

This is a terrific jangle-pop record - ‘Fairweather Friend’, released in January this year by The Umbrellas on Tough Love Records. This is the Trolley Blue limited edition - 88/300 representing!
No difficult second album here - it’s fantastic, and well worth picking up! ♥️😀

Die Kreuzen – “Die Kreuzen” (1984)
Touch And Go Records
1986 US repress, on maroon colored vinyl

I had the original version, but left it in the backseat of my Volkswagen bug during a heatwave in the summer of ‘86, causing it to warp significantly.

I replaced it with this repress version on dark red vinyl.

The Angry Samoans – “Inside My Brain” (1980)
US pressing on Bad Trip Records
12", 45 RPM

Certainly in my top 5 punk bands. They were a great representation of the punk ethos of their time. Angry, snotty, divisive, offensive, and raw.

Lots of infighting with the scene, best demonstrated by their diss track about Rodney Biggenheimer.

Lee Ving is alleged to have produced this album but asked not to have his name credited because of “Get Off The Air”.

I can’t tell if this is a first or second pressing from 1980, or a repressing from 1983. Pretty sure I bought this used, which is why there’s red marker writing on the cover.

Back album cover featuring track listing in red text on black background. Image of the band. Black vinyl disc below.
