Are #philosophy students’ intuitions about thought experiments different because of expertise?
Longitudinal studies of philosophy and #CogSci students (N = 226) didn't seem to reveal as much: there were some group differences in intuitions, but a selection/indoctrination effect seemed more likely than “a general expertise” or “expertise specific to particular subfields”.
I've made it through another half term - a long, dark, difficult - half term. But there's been lots of good stuff too. A student who painted something amazing for me to pass onto an absent colleague. My Yr 11s bringing in props and costumes to film revision material for one of our texts. Fighting for a dyslexia screening, and ultimately a diagnosis, for a Yr 9 boy who didn't understand why school was so tough for him. And now - wine and sleep #EduGlow#Teaching#Education#edutooer@edutooters
...but can we do it without suggesting that the reason a woman would dedicate her life to #science & #teaching was to fill the vacuous space of never having children?
...and maybe also without suggesting some intuitive maternal instinct as the source of her #scientific reasoning?
Fellow professors here on Mastodon, @academicchatter , I'm curious about something: do your students simply NOT understand what citations/ bibliographies are anymore? My students increasingly do not understand what citations are; they think a citation is the same as a bibliographic entry. If they DO understand it, they will only use citations for direct quotes, completely missing moments where they paraphrase an author's ideas. Just my experience or is this widespread? #academia#teaching
Exciting news! OCU Law is hiring. We are looking for a tenured or tenure-track professor to lead our new Tribal Sovereignty Institute. I am the Chair of the Appointments Committee, so do not hesitate to reach out if you have interest or recommendations!
If mapping arguments improves critical thinking, then argument mapping skills should correlate with critical thinking skills, right?
Alas, they didn't correlate among 115 Advanced Placement students across 4 high schools who mapped arguments for universal basic income (from a Douglas Murray article).
After A White Teacher in SC Was Punished For Teaching a Ta-Nehisi Coates Lesson -
Mary Wood taught "Between the World and Me" for a second time to the shock of her peers.
Giving feedback on oral reports: I have everyone grade everyone and collect all the feedback. Then I read through the complete stack for a student and share to them 1) what their peers liked/found useful, 2) what they were curious about afterwards, and 3) how this ties to things we'll be doing later in the semester.
I'm very lucky to be going to spend the day tomorrow at one of the UK's most famous and prestigious private schools. I'm just fascinated by how they do things - and how similar or different it is to a state school education, and what we can actually magpie and use in our own setting. Any profound/insightful questions I should be asking...? #Education#Teaching#Edutooter#SecondaryEducation@edutooters
My son gave the library this mini greenhouse from our Amazon wishlist. My students & I built it and now we’re ready to begin our seed starts for the spring garden! #libraries#gardening#teaching
Can anyone suggest effective methods for teaching a blind person how to repair small, intricate items, a task that involves using razorblades, torches, hammers, and screwdrivers with great precision? #accessibility#teaching
One of the university classes I was scheduled to teach this semester cancelled due to lack of enrollment. Bummer, as the students would have worked on getting an amateur radio license. But, I have zero idea how students decide whether or not to sign up for my classes. 🤔 #teaching
Remember how when we (olds) used to not carry water bottles to school and if we were thirsty in school had to drink directly from the drinking fountain? #education#water#children#teaching
