Unrequested Movie Opinions, Pt. 001: Last night I reckoned that it was time to give Ken Russell's 1980 SF excursion ALTERED STATES a proper view (I saw it on a crappy B&W TV set in the 1980s and forgot 95% of the details). Yeah, it's got narrative quirks and Annoying Character problems, but it was far more reined-in and focused than I remembered. Revelation time: I had no idea that the late, great Jordan Cronenweth shot the film (two years prior to his work on BLADE RUNNER), and his stylistic flourishes are in full force. Die Wissenschaftler des neuen SETI-Projekts untersuchen mit ihren Empfangsantennen die Nachbarsterne auf potenzielle Radiosignale fremder Zivilisationen. Insgesamt verrichten rund zweitausend Menschen ihren Dienst auf der Triton-Basis.
Die Eiswüsten auf dem Jupitermond Europa, die Staubstürme des Mars und die urweltlichen Kohlenwasserstoffmeere auf dem Saturnmond Titan haben Raumfahrer der Erde mit eigenen Augen gesehen, außerirdisches Leben fanden sie aber bisher nicht.
Eines der wichtigsten Ziele der Menschheit bleibt die friedliche Kontaktaufnahme mit fremden Zivilisationen im All. Unbewusst hoffen die meisten Wissenschaftler, dass diese Lebensformen uns ähnlich sind und eine Verständigung möglich ist. Bislang verlief die Suche erfolglos, was jedoch nicht ausschließt, dass sie in den unendlichen Weiten des Alls existieren und uns bereits beobachten.

Virgil Finlay served in the US Army during WWII and saw combat in the South West Pacific theater, but also created posters and illustrations for the Morale Services during his three years of service. This is one of those illustrations as it is signed, "Oahu, Hawaii 1945". His editor must have liked it because he commissioned Finlay’s friend and fine writer Catherine L. Moore to create a story based on it.
I neglected to cross-post my review of Aestus Book 2 over here on Calckey.
In summary this second book is excellent - if you loved Book 1, you'll love this (feels like one big book in two parts). And I very much loved Book 1.
It has been a month since I finished the two books and I keep thinking back over them in my head, they had such an impact - I have many more thoughts about the books that I should probably write another review!
I miss that world so much, I'm quite taken aback by how it got into my head - it's a rare experience for me to become this absorbed in a world.
I've read a lot of science fiction over the years - it's my favourite genre - and @szattwellauthor is easily one of the best I ever read. I really can't recommend her books highly enough.
