Interests include pre-code Hollywood, old punk rock records, and neglected San Francisco Bay Area history and folklore. Used to do fanzines, and now draw, write, and stare into the middle distance. Will likely post about B-movies and garage bands, so there's that.

Watched I DON'T KNOW JACK (2002), the low-budget talking-head documentary about character actor/David Lynch mainstay Jack Nance last night, and have some thoughts. What little I knew about the guy was confirmed: he had a rough life and aged far, far beyond his chronological years due to decades of booze and rough, rough living. Cautionary tale + character study. I bought the hard-to-find DVD for $40 and am not likely to rewatch, but it's good to know that I can revisit it when the mood strikes and appropriate circumstances arise. #Actor #DavidLynch #Eraserhead #JackNance #Movies #TwinPeaks

12/4/23 Open 6-9p. No open containers, please.

Today's feature is Doc Savage paperbacks of the 1960s and '70s from Bantam Books. They're reprints from Doc Savage magazine, a pulp from the '30s and '40s published by Street and Smith. Nearly 90 percent of the initial Doc Savage stories were written by author Lester Dent. Kenneth Robeson was a house-name owned by Street and Smith.
Adventure awaits!

@BonnettsBooks @bookstodon James Bama’s cover art (with Steve Holland as model) was always gnarly and intriguing . I remember these paperbacks were virtually everywhere in the 70s. Omnipresent.

Synth genius Wendy Carlos studied physics & music at Brown & Columbia. She helped develop the 1st Moog synthesizer & her 1968 classical album Switched-On Bach went platinum. She brought & tech together & composed soundtracks for A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Tron & more.

Carlos was assigned male at birth & transitioned to female. Unfortunately, many journalists focus more on her gender than her accomplishments that changed music forever. http://www.wendycarlos.com

@AndyPaciorekArt Nice Ed Roth “Surfink” costume back there. That dates this photo to 1965-ish (or thereabouts).

Saturn 3 was a real bait and switch. It stars Farrah Fawcett, but it was Kirk Douglas who couldn’t keep his shirt on. Script by Martin Amis, by the way.

@thudfactor Only saw this for the first time during those wonderful days of sheltering in place (so it bore a special resonance). I was miffed that they dubbed over Harvey Keitel - but I also like Roy Dotrice (who did the dub) so there was some emotional conflict happening.

Personal Angle: I moved away long ago, but I'm originally from California's oft-derided San Joaquin Valley. I cling to this single image as proof that my favorite punk band once played a gig there, far from its sleazy North Beach comfort zone. 1980, which plunks it right in the middle of their "Maserati/Gangster Funk" period. #1980s #KilledByDeath #Punk #SanFrancisco #SFPunk #Stockton

I can confirm that Valley punk shows did, and still do, take place at venues that look like this. Seems it's still a social hall of some sort?

Unrequested Movie Opinions, Pt. 001: Last night I reckoned that it was time to give Ken Russell's 1980 SF excursion ALTERED STATES a proper view (I saw it on a crappy B&W TV set in the 1980s and forgot 95% of the details). Yeah, it's got narrative quirks and Annoying Character problems, but it was far more reined-in and focused than I remembered. Revelation time: I had no idea that the late, great Jordan Cronenweth shot the film (two years prior to his work on BLADE RUNNER), and his stylistic flourishes are in full force. Solid, inky blacks, unexpected light sources, faces bathed in cathode blue. Rain. Mist. #1980s #AlteredStates #KenRussell #Movies #ScienceFiction

Bob Balaban helps William Hurt emerge from a sensory deprivation tank in the film ALTERED STATES (1980) in a sequence that was clearly inspirational to the STRANGER THINGS people.

@thudfactor I avoided this back in the 80s (I thought it took too many liberties with HPL - I was a pretty uptight teenager). The colors and setpieces are gorgeous and the cast are the very definition of "good sports."

@thudfactor I really think that being presented with fewer choices - like a single wall at a local video rental shop - made life easier. You’d take chance on something you might not normally rent, just because you’d burned through all the obvious options.
