Just last month Elon Musk announced that Tesla would be launching its own robotaxi service in August, but to this date, its driverless testing hasn’t even begun because its software isn’t ready.
Its competitor Waymo, by comparison, launched its driverless taxi in 2020 in the residential streets in the Phoenix suburbs, and continues to gradually ratchet up the difficulty level of its routes — steering clear of freeways and relying on human backup in case of emergencies.
Has Tesla underestimated the work required to build a safe driverless taxi service? @arstechnica considers the challenges Musk’s company could have ahead.
This driverless Waymo came to a full stop in the bike lane ahead of us, even though there was plenty of space in the passenger loading zone a few feet away. I waited to see if the Waymo would ever pull into the loading zone, but I got tired of waiting after 5 minutes. #SanFrancisco#Waymo#Robotaxi
Self-driving vehicles could be on U.K. roads within two years, after the Automated Vehicles (AV) Act received royal assent to become law.
A core part of the new legislation, which has been in the works since 2022, confirms that corporations will be the ones held responsible in the event of a crash, “meaning a human driver would not be liable for incidents related to driving while the vehicle is in control.”
“most striking about the tale of the Bell rocket belt is the shape of the deception that Moore and Bell pulled off” #jetpacks
“exactly what the #selfdriving car #robotaxi bros did over the past decade to convince us all that the human driver was already obsolete. The playbook was nearly identical”
“we have vested an alarming amount of power in the hands of #tech#billionaires”
The video of the Waymo #robotaxi driving the wrong way in my neighborhood was already bad enough, but Google's bullshit excuse makes it worse.
A reasonable human would have turned off and gone on one of the various parallel alternative or sucked it up and driven slowly behind the people riding their unicycles. Instead, the programmers decided the self-driving car was going to double down.
A #Waymo#robotaxi hit a cyclist because the robotaxi made a dangerous turn. The robotaxi drove too fast for its limited field of vision, couldn't brake in time, and struck a person. This is the same impatient behavior we see from human drivers. It's very simple to program the robotaxi to be more cautious, but safe driving = slower trips = less money.
Robotaxis will never be safe when faster, riskier driving creates more profits
Seit zwei Monaten darf Cruise fahrerlose Taxifahrten gegen Bezahlung in San Francisco anbieten.
California DMV: "Public safety remains the California DMV’s top priority, and the department’s autonomous vehicle regulations provide a framework to facilitate the safe testing and deployment of this technology on California public roads. When there is an unreasonable risk to public safety, the DMV can immediately suspend or revoke permits. There is no set time for a suspension.
The California DMV today notified Cruise that the department is suspending Cruise’s autonomous vehicle deployment and driverless testing permits, effective immediately."
