The Problem With Your Answers To My Questions

When I complain about a product, your answer to just stop using it stinks, very badly.

Once in a while, I run into problems with this or that product. Sometimes, when I cannot find a solution, I post my issue to the fediverse, hoping someone will have the answer.

A lot of people don’t respond. This is entirely fine.

Some people respond with their own problem. That’s also fine.

Some people respond that they swear never to use the product in question again. Yes, this is entirely fine, too. I’m in favor of you making the decision to not use this product again.

However, some people come to tell me that I should not use the product I’m using. This is it. This is the entirety of their response. They don’t suggest something else, they just shit on the product.

How is this at all useful?

You’ve not solved my problem. In fact, you’ve compounded my problem. You say not to use the product I’m using. Okay. What is the alternative? Ah, well, you did not say, did you? You’re leaving me with the task of having to find the alternative. Your answer stinks.

Once in a while someone come up with an alternative. At least this person is trying to be useful. It is entirely fine to toss an alternative at me, if it is done humbly. That is, if it is done with the understanding that your choice may not be adequate for me. This is fine.

What is definitely not fine is those asshats who insist that I should their own favored product without any inkling that maybe their product is not fine for me. I’ve been on this planet long enough to know that when someone says just use this instead, it is likely that I’m going to run into problems, if not a downright dead end. Your answer stinks.

You want examples?

“WordPress stinks! Just use write.as.”

I tried write.as. It stank, even more than WordPress. I’m not a fan of WordPress, but it gets the job done.

“Chrome stinks! Just use Firefox.”

I actually did the move. Firefox is my primary browser now. However, I forgot how many sites won’t work with Firefox. Yes, I know that this is something that shouldn’t happen in 2024, but here we are. I cannot use any teleconferencing software with Firefox reliably. (Jitsi might work, but I haven’t tried it with many people, so I don’t really know.)

I’ll also add that I most likely have spent time considering the flaws you found in the product I’m using. I’ve most likely also spent time considering alternatives and found them lacking. I especially love it when someone shoves in my face an alternative I’ve already rejected.

You’re not informing me about anything I did not already know. If your answer is among those I declared to be stinking above, your answer stinks too. Even if I don’t tell you to your face. Your answer stinks.

@leonivek Yes yesterday was something going on with both, the page and the app as well, but only for a while, half of the hour or so.

Today looks like is down again. Since circa the hour I can't see anything there except for the spinning circle and tons of "empty" posts, without the pictures, text etc.

No idea what they are doing? There's no informations nowhere about some problems.

I went out to check, and indeed they had left the for package compartment "2B" in our box.

With the key snapped off right at the base of the big plastic "gas station bathroom key attached to a cinderblock" fob...

No package tonight, I guess!

Yes. The inspector had previously told me they had loads of #problems from that guy, but of course very little could be done about it - #public #sector #unions in this country essentially make it #impossible to fire or even discipline their members, no matter how egregious, incompetent, or even malicious they are in the performance of their duties.

Of course, the bad apples are the exception, not the rule - but they ruin things for everyone.

@fraydabson

Do you have an #itch to #scratch? Most of my personal #projects (some publicly released, some not) come from wanting to solve my problems, my way. As you go about your usual life, take note of things that make you think "that's something a computer could do for me" or "it would be easier if...". I know this is kind of trite advice.

I've found it's difficult to make progress on #problems that I think I should want to work on, rather than things I actually want to work on.

The #furnace #odyssey continues.

Got a replacement blower #ECM #motor from northamericahvac.com - had to order from the States. Installed it, and ... furnace was still throwing an #error code meaning "incorrect #signal from ECM motor" once, then "no signal from ECM motor" forever after.

After double-checking, I saw the part number on the box didn't match what I'd ordered - but that turned out to be a red herring. The box number was for the unprogrammed motor.

I don't know what a good new gas furnace costs these days. This one was something like $5k 17 years ago, and they won't have gotten cheaper.

Other than the #melted relay, I can't find any #problems with the board. There could be invisible breakage, but maybe not. So I'll replace the relay.

Of course, the failed relay is no longer available, because it was produced under the Proliferation of Hazardous Substances Act (#PoHS).

As you might have , the motor in my other furnace last week.

I've removed it from the furnace and it, and just like the first one, the motor itself checks out fine - no or at all.

The in it have failed. And only a few months after the other one. It's almost like they're to ; otherwise, how could you make a ton of by prices for what is otherwise a 1/2 HP motor?

Apologies, as this will be a bit #rambling, but it will come back to #Canadian #politics, I promise.

First, the #categorization of #political views along a single left-right #axis is almost #useless. cazabon,

The vertical axis, "", is a little fuzzier concept. A common definition is something like how much you believe that , can solve society's .

If you think we can solve every problem, if only we had the correct government program, or civilian association supporting it, or work hard enough, or if we , etc, then you fall at the top end of this scale.
