Happy birthday to Marjorie Rice (née Jeuck, 1923–2017) who discovered 4 new pentagonal tilings of the Euclidian plane!
The San Diego mother of 5 (6th died in infancy) completed half a correspondence art course after high school & had no training as a #mathematician but was always interested in #math & art. She began to follow SciAm writer/amateur mathematician Martin Gardner's column, rushing to devour the magazine before her son 🧵1/
For #PrinterSolstice prompt spectrum: my #linocut of trailblazing American #astronomer Annie Jump Cannon (1863 – 1941) with her stellar classification system which sorted stars based on spectral types, revealing their temperature from hot blue stars to cool red stars: O,B,A, F, G, K & M. Named after the university the Harvard Classification her tremendous contribution was less visible. 🧵1/n
Happy birthday to Charles Darwin (1809-1882)! Today is Darwin Day to celebrate his birthday, science and evolution.
“The inhabitants believe that these animals are absolutely deaf; certainly they do not overhear a person walking closely behind them. I was always amused, when overtaking one of these great monsters as it was quietly pacing along, to see how suddenly,
It’s the day to celebrate the superb owls! All owls 🦉 are superb but here are some local favourites.
I love the whimsical terms of venery for groups of animals and have an ongoing series of #linocut#termsOfVenery prints. For my parliament of owls I made two columns of local owls - you can decide for yourself which are the government an which the loyal opposition in this parliament!
"Point of Sleat, from Rum" - etching - 30x10 cm - edition of 20.
View from the shore of Loch Scresort on Rum, across the Point of Sleat on the southern tip of Skye to the peaks of Ladhar Bheinn, Sgurr Coire Nan Gobhar, and Sgurr an Eilan Ghuibbais on the mainland.
Have you ever wondered what stock image services looked like in the 1800s?
Over a hundred years before Shutterstock or “AI” image generators, printers had access to some incredible pre-made images for their newspapers, ads or anything else, really.
This #BlackHistoryMonth let’s celebrate trailblazing American #biochemist Marie Maynard Daly (1921-2003), 1st Black woman to earn a PhD in #chemistry in the US! She made important research contributions to the biochemisty of the cell nucleus & cardiovascular issues & our knowledge of the chemistry of histones & protein synthesis. 🧵1/
Testing out plotting transfers for making Lino cuts/prints. Pencil works pretty well on this version and doesn't smear either... (it's for my son for now, but will try with my own work soon too...)
Happy Groundhog Day! I am a fan of the absurdity of weather prognosticating rodents and celebrate Groundhog Day with my thermochromic linocut. The shadow is visible if the ambient temperature is <30°C and disappears when >30°C (and it’s a safe bet winter is over or you are overheating your home. So I argue my print is as dependable as any celebrity rodent! 🧵1/2
In case you missed any here's the full gallery of all of the prints I made in January 2024. Some are still available if you want to "pay what you can" for them.
This is the End! I started making prints on January 1st, and now it's January 31st and I made 46 prints. (Due to a clerical error only 45 of them were on recycled paper I made at home. Oops!)
Anyway, I need to take a short break to do some other work, but I'll return with more prints (or reprints) in a few weeks.
Thank you for all the comments and a huge thank you to those of you who supported the journey by paying for some of this art. It means the world to me.
I feel like I should be able to find this here, but I want to get back to practicing drawing/print making/etc. Are there any good hashtags or accounts for maybe a photo or drawing prompt of the day or week? Thanks!
New art thread for 2024 starts here! This is a mostly daily thread with a different artist featured in each post, primarily modern and contemporary stuff since that's my thing.
Prints by Japanese artist Shima Tamami, 1950s-60s, known for her integration of woodgrain textures into modernist-style compositions with nature themes.
