@ErikJonker@ErikJonker You seem to be mixing up the transparency and accountability principles a bit here? Accountability calls for relevant stakeholders to take full responsibility for actions of their #ai systems and their consequences. Do you believe #Meta will adhere to this principle by (partially) open-sourcing their #LLM code? With respect to transparency it is indeed an encouraging step that they are a more open about their models than their competitors.
@ErikJonker Also remember that #Meta was forced to go ‘open’ because their LLaMA model was leaked… Before that #Meta wasn’t really known as a frontrunner of tech (#ai) democratization. 😄
#Meta is about to pay a record European Union fine for transferring user data from EU servers over to servers in the US.
How big will the fine be? Significantly bigger than the fine that Amazon paid for privacy violations, which was for 746 million euros ($821.20 million).
But I don't think a fine is good enough. Surely if #TikTok will be banned for "theoretically" transferring data to Chinese servers, Meta should be banned for doing the same thing.
And frankly, when #Barcelona comes to the Fediverse, we should all be leery about how Meta handles data. Frankly, I don't trust them.

I think this speed calls for a shoutout to the moderators and admins in the #Fediverse like @Mastodon, who are doing a great job, in contrast to the low response times of their corporate counterparts @ the #Meta brands and #Twitter (who seems to have fired everyone.) 😀

It's kind of #meta (sorry not sorry for the pun) that she is talking about open source and interoperability platform and live-blogging it on the #fediverse
I'm tired of reading about how #Meta manipulates people through AI and algorithms -- and having these manipulations being pitched as "innovations" by tech media.
Now Meta's biggest PR push is how AI-driven recommendations have resulted in a 24% increase in time spent on #Instagram.
This is just one more reason I've been adamant about building a decentralized alternative to Big Social.
Sure, Meta will arrive on the Fediverse soon with #Barcelona. But I sure as hell refuse to be held hostage by their constant mass manipulation in order to fulfil some arbitrary KPI.
Do we know #Meta's position on #VR going forwards? This article is suggesting all funding is cut to focus on AI, but since the description of a headset was "an uncomfortable version of Zoom", I'm assuming the writer has never actually used VR and may not know the difference between hardware & software!
Meta did make VR far more accessible with the Quest headset, so I'd be sad to see that investment go. On the other hand, they may not be best for developing software.

Meanwhile, the Fediverse has been developed at a fraction of the cost -- and it's already overtaken the Metaverse in terms of end user adoption.
