A bit ironic given this is disseminated over the Internet...
The Internet would be far better if giant corporations didn't control platforms & endlessly surveille & profile & do so very unequally--to me that largely is a capitalism, governance & regulatory failure--power & control of infrastructure.
In the opinion portion of Kurzgesagt's most recent video, they suggest that going back to small forums, bulletin boards, etc. will help people deradicalize and become more empathetic. The idea behind this is that, just like real life, forums allow people who disagree on certain things to bond under a shared interest or identity;...
A question: lately I've been giving some thought to the impact of #climate change on the #Internet 's actual infrastructure - and I'm curious... what do YOU see as some of the potential impacts to the Internet?
An obvious one is that rising sea levels could drown out landing stations for subsea cables. Another is that droughts can reduce the water available for cooling data centers.
I have a tech coming this morning to work on my home internet and telephone. We switched from a regular landline phone to a U-verse phone which is VOIP - I'm pretty sure. He's supposed to double my regular internet speed as well. Which would be from a whopping 1.5 Mbps to 3 Mbps. The VOIP phone is much less expensive. The internet ... well I usually just use a hotspot because it's faster, not screaming fast, but fast enough that I can get things done. Right now, I get 25 Mbps going through my hotspot device and over 700 Mbps using my phone as a hotspot. I think my hotspot device breaks down into 32 25 Mbps segments. I need to look into that.
Hmmm ... I just looked up a word on the internet and the definition had a word that I had to look up. 😆

Joking aside, the "baby boomers" you are insulting as not knowing anything about computers were also the people who invented the internet.
The oldest boomers born in 1946 had careers from about 1966 to 1998. Youngest, born 1964, from 1984 to 2016.
Aol started in 1985
Netscape in 1994
Geocities in 1994

For our #MorningMoments today, tell me what you have planned and what you hope to do this upcoming weekend.
For me, I have a Spectrum technician coming out between 1pm - 2pm today to check what's been going on with our internet. Hopefully they fix or replace the things that need to be fixed and/or replaced.
Work stuff as usual, then of course video games throughout the day.
Let's get this out of the way: they give a number of #reasons why #webservers "might wish" to establish that a web #client is running on a "#trusted" software stack, including things like "make sure other game players aren't cheating" and "ensure I'm talking to another human".
One of the things I loved about joining #Mastodon and the #Fediverse as a whole was finding similar kinds of friendly and positive interactions I found in the earlier #Internet#Forum days, as-well as later in the early #Twitter days. There's general friendliness, and more and more and more folk are joining every day. It's real nice, but also not the complete picture, of course.
Congratulations to @mike on launching "Dot Social," a @Flipboard podcast exploring the future of social media, the evolution of the internet and the opening of new standards such as ActivityPub.
Can anyone help me to understand how I need to set up #internet and #streaming services so I can eliminate cable?
I have been considering this for sometime, and working on it. With Roger’s takeover of Shaw, the wifi is no longer cooperating with their provided tv box. It has to be hardwired. This among a list of other issues are securing my interest in alternative access to entertainment.
Created this after reading conversation in comments below some tech article somewhere. Someone mentioned "surfing the #internet sewer" and I really liked that phrase.

Hm... pora spojrzeć prawdzie w oczy, drodzy Fediwersjanie. 👀 :fediverse:
On the Internet, public space is not a place like Facebook or Xitter. It is the sum total of the interconnections between individually owned and controlled places.
This is why I’m designing the Small Web to enable everyone to have their own place on the web.
