"He showed me how to strum and set me free to play. Three strings—past, present, and future—unified in one connective strum. I inhaled deeply to keep from crying. Yes, this is beautiful."

Oboe production. Quality musical instruments aren't cheap. Professional wind instruments are expensive, but nothing compared to professional (and historical) stringed instruments. Pipe organs, of course, are a separate entity, since they usually including an entire building. 😮

It seems this weekend my music making endeavours revolve around this . This is my custom "modern" Jeli ngoni (also n'goni, koni, xalam, etc.), which differs a little from the traditional one in that it has a larger bowl-shaped body, wooden bridge, neck-through design, geared tuners and CNC'ed neck, compared to the traditional long-oval-shaped body, spike-lute (i.e. partial-through-neck) design, calabash bridge, leather ring tuners and dowel neck.

My first attempt at creating an udu hand drum.

I am looking forward to getting it bisqued and glazed and then playing it for real!

I find it frustrating that many articles state drums are the oldest #Instrument; often based on primates beating trees with sticks; a natural idiophone used for signalling, not a drum. AFAIK the oldest drum comes from China (5500BC).
Any skin, a finite resource until domestication of livestock (9000BC), would likely have be used for shelter and clothing. The flutes and rattles we know of are made from materials with less
essential utility; bone, horn, teeth, shells.

Check out this super-cool instrument called a “DataBass.” Scott Mulvahill, the musician playing it in this video, is the person who invented it. It’s an upright bass with sample triggers affixed to the body. And it sounds absolutely delightful.

This Abraham Cupeiro playing the carnyx (karnyx). It’s a Celtic instrument that was used to pump up soldiers for battle and/or intimidate opponents.

It is an enigmatic blend of beauty and fear. Imagine seeing/hearing hundreds of these as an army approaches you for battle.

Abraham playing the carnyx alone in a large studio room with a few lights on the ground. The horn is solid brass pipe with no painted decorations. It’s a very long s shape that extends high into the air with a large dragon like head at the end of it where the sound exits.

My long time musician friend and neighbour gave me some of his 'musical toys' as he called them.

Among them was a Japanese made Theremin that he "couldn't get going, but maybe I could make some use of it."

I did some digging and found out it's a Gakken Theremin Premium, made in 2008, sold for roughly $100 USD. I found the English manual pdf and got it working! Definitely finicky to calibrate but eventually I was able to coax around 3 and a half octave range out of it!

Similar in look to that of the tVox Tour, you wear a grounding strap on your left wrist, controlling volume, and pitch on the right. It has only one tone, but it has a 1/8" out jack, which I'm excited to plug into my modular envelope follower and see what happens!

Here's an article about it:

okayyyyy if I play the pianosheet speed at at 0.25 speed i can play the easy part I've been particticing (first piece I'm working on for real,) without mistakes with both hands so I guess I have to practice practice practice and up the speed until I'm at the 1x speed! And then I can get to the hard part, practice both hand, repeat #piano #instrument #music

I love how that part is "fuck you in particular" (I know it's meant to be, which is funnier), but seriously I hate when I have to play it. I know it's going to be easier soon :)

Here are some guitars I've built over the past few years. The necks, freboards, and fretting were all done from scratch. Most of these have been commissions. All the hardware (tuners, pickups, bridges, strings) I buy from CBGitty. #guitar #homemade #luthier #music #bass #cigarboxguitar #instruments #commissions

The first time I saw a piano when I was a child I fell in love so I took classes and I remember that my teacher always had to tell me to open my eyes, because I closed them to feel the music through my fingers but she told me that I needed to read the notes 🤭 I love the power of music in my life.

This is an #exoplanet (β pic b) orbiting its host #star.

The #planet is directly observed over 17 years by various instruments with different size of coronographs (the black disk in the #instrument occulting the star).

From 2004 to 2010 and from 2016 to 2018, the planet is too close to the star such as it is also behind the #coronograph.

β pic b is a young (12Myr) massive planet (~10Mjup) with period of ~20 yr 🪐
