Don't worry - I'm not going to stop posting said content here. Not that I think you were too worried, but just in case :blobnook:
And at the moment I'm not planning on doing that here - one personal #Mastodon account is enough for me. This is a multi-fandom geek Dad account!
But, I wonder how y'all feel about making separate, niche accounts for your fandoms. I know that happens on Instagram, but wasn't sure if people were doing that in the #Fediverse too.
On today’s show (releases at 4pm PT):
🎬 #YouTube unveils #Shorts ad formats at #NewFronts
📆 Meta Monday with Andrew Foxwell
📍 Meta simplifies ad targeting; geographic-based #ads will suffer
💰 Ad spending remains steady despite downturn fears
🛍️ #Amazon's Q1 retail sales stagnate, services grow
📱 #Instagram tests UGC-sourcing feature for brands
🎶 Instagram experiments with songs in photo carousels
🔎 #TikTok will soon auto-flag deepfakes https://todayindigital.com/
I keep getting motorcycle POV police getaway videos in my #YouTube#shorts feed and I keep reporting them for containing dangerous acts. Wtf is wrong with people. #report#contentmoderation
#Tiktok and #ShortVideo content is a cancer regarding this. People are just rrying to go viral and do the same stupid stuff over-and-over and just hope they get the next trend. Whether it is to get others to drink tidepods orbto steal a Hyundai belinging to someone just as a joke.
But companies like #Meta, #Google, #Youtube, #Instagram, and #Tiktok are exploiting this because they are generating clicks, and they can show people ads. This is why they don't moderate these things.
The messed-up thing is that they then moderate and remove legit creators for stupid reasons and false copyright claims.
Social media is broken because it now has longer existed. It is just a bunch of advertisement companies with extra steps.
WordPress.com: Why #Twitter Auto-Sharing Is Coming to an End
For WordPress.com and #Jetpack users, Twitter will no longer be part of Jetpack Social. However, we’re adding #Instagram and #Mastodon very soon. In the meantime, auto-sharing to Tumblr, #Facebook, and #LinkedIn still works as expected, and you can continue sharing your blog post links on Twitter manually through their app or desktop site.
This confirms what I've been thinking #Musk is going to do with #twitter. He's turning it into a big mall: first he partnered with eToro to expand the #financial services they offer, now he's trying to set up a virtual #news stand, next it will be #shop-fronts for every #brand that wants to sell things on Twitter.
The idea here is that he'll get rent for the shop-fronts, while also getting a cut off all the transactions...
@unattributed That actually sounds like a good idea considering how much people use social media; but, we've never seen this done successfully because (both #FaceBook and #Instagram have failed at this).
But, I was mostly referring to #Twitter trying to become a home for articles. I doubt it will find a way to integrate them well; it's still a microblogging platform at heart, after all.
The idea of charging per article is pretty cool though.
#Twitter invested at least $13M in #Bluesky.
Sure, they say it operates independently, but Musk must still retain significant influence and control through Twitter's stake. Moving from Twitter to Bluesky might seem like flipping off Musk, but is it really? Did moving from #Facebook to #Instagram make you feel like you just flipped off Zuckerberg?
Maybe this why Bsky is getting such a boost on birdsite right now. The goal was eventually to integrate it to Twitter (Verge reported).
Meanwhile, there is a true #Fediverse that is not built and controlled by billionaires.
It's interesting to me that so many of us are regular smartphone users now, and we all use them in such different ways.
Figured I'd look at my phone's most used apps as I've never paid much attention to it before. Out of the 55 apps I've used in the last 6 days, yeah, my top 6 aren't a surprise to me at all. 🤣
@atomicpoet Shared this morning with my Instagram followers. It’s a fine line, wanting to lure people over while not being a broken record. I talk about #Mastodon a lot on #Meta platforms. It may be 1/3 to 1/2 of what I share there 😬 I dunno. I don’t care if I drive away followers really & I’m an artist. I’ve always shared a mix of my images, ideas, & #mentalHealth journey. Choosing to spend time on the #Fediverse instead of #Facebook & #Instagram is part of that. #SocialMedia
#Pixelfed on #Android is so horrible despite the many good improvements. the experience really feels so janky. no photo picker, uploading multiple photos requires picking them one at a time from the file picker, adding ALT text is ABSOLUTELY frustrating cos u couldn't even see the cursor, u couldn't move the cursor whatsoever to whichever part of ur ALT text, u couldn't even scroll thru ur ALT text to SEE what's been written. ive dumped #Instagram for this, happily, but this sucks ass.
Pixelfed Brain Trust: I'm trying to import my Instagram history into my own self-hosted server, but the importer is asking for a media.json file that no longer exists in Instagram's latest data download format. Furthermore, there is also NO photos directory either.
Is Pixelfed lagging Instagram on this front or has someone addressed this? Note that I installed the server last night, so I should be up to date with the latest codebase.
Once I get off of #Instagram, I am gonna lose access to all of the cute and funny content. I am really going to miss that. Anyone know if this stuff can be found on #Mastodon anywhere?
#Google isn't a search engine. #Facebook isn't a journal to share with your friend. #Instagram isn't a public photo album. #Twitter isn't a micro-blogging website.
The classic trilemma goes: "Fast, cheap or good, pick any two." The Moderator's Trilemma goes, "Large, diverse userbase; centralized platforms; don't anger users - pick any two." The Moderator's Trilemma is introduced in "Moderating the Fediverse: Content Moderation on Distributed Social Media," a superb paper from @arozenshtein U of Minnesota Law, forthcoming in the journal Free Speech Law, available as a prepub on SSRN:
And platforms play very fast and loose with their definition of "malicious code" - as when #Apple blocked #OGApp, an #Instagram ad-blocker that gave you a simple feed consisting of just the posts from the people you followed:
To resolve the Moderator's Trilemma, we need to embrace #subsidiarity: "decisions should be made at the lowest organizational level capable of making such decisions."
#Instagram#pixelfed#import
@pixelfed@pixelfed I have searched the internet and still have not found a solution. I only find posts that address the same problem.
How to motivate people to switch platforms if you can't take their timeline with you.
I know it's not Pixelfed's fault, but without a user-friendly import function, the motivation dwindles. And people stay on Instagram even though they're annoyed by ads and algorithms. #instagram#pixelfed#import
