Il nuovo concorrente di Twitter è Instagram? La nuova app guarderebbe al fediverso più che al metaverso

@fediverso

Wow the misrepresentations of history people have to jump into to pretend surveillance capitalism takeovers are a good thing!

Honestly not something I expected to see on the Fediverse, but I guess techbro (and techsis, let's not pretend gender has anything to do with this, I've seen the BS spewed by both kinds) mentality is inescapable.

I wonder if it would be appropriate to use the term to refer to people on the that are over the moon with delight at the idea of Meta (the company that blocks the tag on ) “joining” the Fediverse with their own Mastodon competitor.

So let me wrap my head around this regarding ...

  • (572M blogs) wants to integrate it
  • (2B users) wants to start an app that supports it
  • starts its own instance
  • started its own Mastodon instance
  • now has an official ActivityPub plugin
  • (60M users) is considering using the protocol

🤯

Am I missing something or does it look like the might actually win the "social media wars" in the end? 🤔

With the release of #Barcelona looming, i wonder if i'll see my mum bouncing around on Fedi.

Kinda doubt it, she's somewhat tech-illiterate and stuck in the dirt with her ways. She had a Nokia before her iPhone and she's been on #Facebook since forever, only uses #Instagram for her dog business.

It's amazing how a single man and the ruin of #Twitter can bring other companies to try their chance in microblogging. First years of nothing and then #Spoutible, #Bluesky and now #Instagram/#Meta...

「 This text-based app will stand alone, but it will be partially integrated within Instagram. Users will keep their Instagram verification and handle, and all of their followers will receive a notification to go follow them on the to-be-named platform. Like Mastodon and Bluesky, Meta’s text-based platform will be decentralized and interoperable with Mastodon, which is built on the ActivityPub protocol 」

#Instagram users, why are you waiting for Barcelona app? Join any smaller instance on the #Fediverse instead. Many instances will start defederating Meta later.

Whilst I am worried they will try the old “embrace, extend, extinguish” plan, I must admit I’m quite excited for #Meta to join their apps into the #Fediverse.

An extra 2bn people to talk to on here! And the ones who really enjoy it will find out they can switch to #mastodon or #calckey or one of the others for a similar experience but with no ads and better moderation. Nice!

***** When Google Doesn't Care *****

Why am I pushing a "Users' Bill of Account Rights" now? While this does not apply only to #Google, I frankly am deeply tired of people coming to me desperate, pleading, for help trying to restore access to locked out Google accounts. Google won't respond to them. They ask who they can talk to? Who can they PAY? Personal and business emails, precious photos, files. They trusted Google. They followed the rules. They did nothing illegal. And they've lost access to everything. To Google, they're just in the noise at Google scale.

It's been this way at Google since the firm's start, but over the years Google has encouraged ordinary, nontechnical people to trust them more and more. And that usually works great, until something goes wrong.

Up to now, I've sometimes been able to informally help in these situations, via contacts at Google. But even that has become much more difficult. This is getting worse, not better.

Google has the resources -- money and smart minds -- to solve these problems. This is not rocket science, or even computer science. There are straightforward ways to make this far better for Google users otherwise locked out and left to swing in the wind. The sad fact is that Google simply doesn't consider them to rise to the level worth helping.

This must change now. -L

Hmm... on one hand, it's still owned by Meta, and Facebook/Instagram's flaws still linger over all of this.

OTOH, Instagram is still popular, even by some as a Twitter alternative (versus going back to Facebook, or coming to Mastodon).

A few questions:

  • will Meta's Twitter replacement have a chronological feed?
  • will it be remotely friendly for adult creators (apparently one of Twitter's appeals, as one of the few online spots for such left)?

Otherwise, the comment about being tied to ActivityPub makes me wonder if it could be the "Chromebook version of Mastodon" take that I feel could be popular. It sounds easy to use, has Meta's moderation, and is backed by a large company with resources. And while Zuckerberg isn't popular, he's Mr. Charismatic compared to Elon (plus, Mark isn't rubbing his presence in FB/Instagram users' faces).

I barely just finished posting about 's responsibility in killing off (and in what sense exactly) <https://sociale.network/@oblomov/110395233362332095> that Meta aka confirms its upcoming competitor codenamed will “interoperate with ” (i.e. will support )

The only measure in which this news can be viewed positively is that the decision confirms the as a threat to the social silos. Let's keep it this way. Do not trust . Do not forget that just last week tried to block the tag <https://mastodon.social/@pixelfed/110338112401101688>, lest people became aware of the existence of the world outside, a world that still has the appeal of early-days IG, and not subject to the threat of enshittification.

Meta's new decentralized social media platform, Barcelona, may potentially become part of ActivityPub. That means they will probably be part of our fediverse.

Regardless of one's opinion on Meta, I would argue that this is a positive direction.

Users can still choose their own instances. This will only contribute to more PR around our well-implemented decentralized ecosystem.

I'm honestly looking forward to Barcelona the new #instagram app not saying i will sign up but if it's what they say it is I really hope it ends Twitter once and for all

atomicpoet, (edited ) to internet

#Barcelona, #Meta's Twitter competitor, will be ready by summer.

And lest you believe #ActivityPub integration was just some rumour, think again. In a slide, Meta confirms that Barcelona will indeed be decentralized and will be compatible with Mastodon.

Everyone who thought that AT protocol would easily win over ActivityPub, and that #Bluesky would kill Mastodon just because a few influencers joined doesn't understand the sheer marketing power and pull that Meta has at its disposal.

But believe me, I'm not exactly cheering on Meta here. Generally, where Meta goes, shenanigans happen. I simply don't think Meta is capable of releasing a product without dark patterns.

Nevertheless, I don't think the Fediverse is even close to preparing for what will happen once Barcelona starts federating.

We should all be taking Barcelona very seriously.

The one thing that could end #Twitter is #instagram literally they making a decentralized clone of Twitter and Instagram combined. This is genius big time having the combination of 2 services into 1 will increase usage the end of Twitter should be coming soon
