Chicago-based software developer and entrepreneur out on adventures.

Disclosure: Retail investor in #RKLB, #PL, #SMR, #BKSY, and a host of boring broad-market index funds. Will geek out about the companies listed above.

Typical Saturday - I have a full UNSCHEDULED day for getting stuff done that the rest of the week pushed to the back burner, and my brain refuses to get into gear.

So apparently a lot of people spend a lot of time musing about what music/songs they want to have played at their funeral. Given my ongoing immortality project, which I expect to yield significant developments any day now, this is not of major consequence in my routine thinking.

However, if push came to shove, right now it might be a toss-up between the closing movement of "A Midsummer's Night's Dream" and Stealers Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle With You".

chris,

@lauren GUNSHIP's "Gates of Disorder" for me.

chris,

@laird @lauren

You save "Still Alive" as the funeral bonus track. You wait until the "last" song plays for about ten minutes and start playing that one when folks are headed out and not expecting any more music.

chris,

@lauren Borrow a page from Burgess Meredith, Jack Lemon, and Walter Mattheau on "Grumpy Old Men".

A great movie with even greater credits.

Literally have now spent half the flight time from Tucson to Chicago in traffic from ohare to hotel. Remind me again why people like cities like this?

chris,

@scheidegger Welcome to Chicago on Mexican Independence Day weekend. Traffic everywhere is borked.

It's been exactly one year since I got back into #Photography after deciding to learn the fundamentals this time around vs winging it. I've learned a ton over the past year, and am still really enjoying it! This is one of the first photos I took on the current camera #DogsofMastodon

chris,

@cdlhamma For those of us seeking to move beyond "winging it", any resources you'd recommend?

chris,

@cdlhamma Thank you!

This was an EXTREMELY interesting paper on what modern LLMs can learn from older older symbolic AI / expert system approaches to improve the validity of what those statistical models generate on their own, using the Cyc system as the contrast to the modern systems.

I had to read up on this from a couple of different sources, as I was pretty sure that I wasn't reading the first articles correctly.

Let's see if my Cubbies are in a position to take advantage of some of these to reinforce our bullpen.

    The Sup. beta will launch in an ephemeral state without encryption and partial federation support, while we work out the final details.

    The timeline for encryption + full federation will be a few weeks, during which users will be able to beta test the UI and other features, and devs can test encryption.

    Spread the word 📢

    chris,

    @dansup

    Quick question - are you building all of this from scratch or are you leveraging any of the technology or approaches from the OG federated messaging system: XMPP?

    If the answer is "no", I just hope that you're not reinventing the wheel unnecessarily (or developing a server that precludes an XMPP interface in the future).

    Keep up the good work and godspeed shipping your MVP.

    Today in 1982, #JimRice goes into the stands to aid a 4-year-old boy who was struck by a line drive. After emergency surgery and five days in the hospital, the child goes on to make a full recovery. To this day, his family believes Jim Rice saved his life.

    sup. is an open source encrypted fediverse instant messenger, similar to whatsapp, made by pixelfed.

    The beta will be launching later this month, and btw most fediverse accounts will work, not just Pixelfed 😉

    Can you set up a crowdfunding site for interested folks like me to chip in to pay for a third-party security review / audit?

    This sounds amazing, but some extra eyes on the implementation to sign off on its robustness would be appreciated before I start relying on its E2EE.

    I looked at my packed client schedule for next week and thought, 'This is BS! This is total BS! I've got back-to-back-to-back sessions!!!". Then I looked around for someone to blame and realized...

    It's me.

    That's the problem with working for yourself. When your one and only employee is off sick, the blame boomerangs and smacks you right in the.....🙄

    chris,

    Once the new app build is out, I'll work on the new timeline service that will enable hashtag follows, muted keywords, blocks/mutes and better performance!

    Then I'll be adding user level block import/exports and domain blocks.

    Everything seems to be coming together, and I'm here for it 🚀

    Imagine controlling a brand whose name and associated actions have, miraculously, entered the language of everyday life in the only way that can really happen … just a purely organic process of adoption, to the point where competitors use pastiches of “your” words. The kind of thing marketers dream of but know in their hearts cannot be artificially induced. Astonishingly valuable. Now imagine you are a boneheaded narcissist billionaire with a long-term fixation on the letter ‘x'.

    chris,

    @kjhealy

    Prediction - Musk will sell the Twitter brand and domains to some sketchy company that uses it for SEO purposes or advertising.

    Imagine every existing Twitter embed now becoming a billboard for some company to sell advertising to the highest bidder. How many webmasters will go back and take the time to first locate all the embeds, then delete them?

    Or better yet, the new owner charges site owners a fee to NOT advertise through the embeds on their sites?

    I'm writing Java for the first time in 20 years for my graduate school work.

    One thing that irritates me about Java is that package names work like this: you invert your organisation's domain name, and then add the package to the end, like this:

    package me.evanp.somepackagename;

    It's irritating because it's backwards. It's their syntax; they could have just as easily made it:

    package somepackagename.evanp.me;

    chris,

    @evan It makes more sense when you are using packages that share the same prefix and you want to organize your imports.
