Latest map showing the latest volcanic eruption near Grindavík. It shows how close the lava flow is to town and how the last road into town almost got covered in lava.
It is impressive how the walls have worked so well so far. Hopefully they will continue to keep the lava out!
Grindavík is a town close to my heart. I feel for all those that have had to leave their homes there.
One of the fast-moving lava flows from today's eruption seems to be following the westward path similar that of the eruption on Jan 14. It has crossed the main NS road just north of Grindavîk and is getting close to one of the towers of the U.S. Navy Radio Transmitter Facility.
The camera is on a hilltop at Þorbjörn, north of Grindavîk, facing south. See map in post #1 for the location of Þorbjörn.
Here is a well-framed aerial photograph of the area from south of Grindavîk looking north.
It shows lava flowing west of the town, thanks to the lava barriers that have been erected around Grindavîk. The radio tower and its facilities are safe too.
The picture was taken by Otti Rafn Sigmarsson, a rescue team member from Þorbirn in Grindavík.
Here is the road getting over-run in two stills. Apparently 3 people have refused to evacuate the town. No idea how long the coastal road to the east or west will last, but the main evacuation route is gone.
