It's a dire week for #heritage and #culture in #Wales unfortunately, and the protests and petitions didn't do enough to dissuade the Senedd from severe cuts. 😔
Budu is #Kelantan’s traditional anchovy sauce, wau is a traditional bow-shaped Kelantan kite, silat jawi is a martial art & dikir barat is a traditional musical form.
Mak yong, a traditional dance-drama originating from the northern part of #Malaysia, was banned by the PAS-led state government for its alleged animist elements. The dance had been declared by Unesco as one of the “Masterpieces of the Oral & Intangible #Heritage of Humanity” 2005.
Because it's #French surrender day over in #Fishguard and because Jemima Nicholas had a #PurplePlaque unveiled today in her honour, here's a little piece I wrote a little while back about the visual #iconography surrounding the Battle of Fishguard.
❗ There's still time to register (free of charge) for the #REWIND project workshop, where the trainers will explain the #IATML methodology, a computational method that allows us to analyse discourses.
It can help us, for example, study the opinions of the population, combining ontological, argumentative and agency analysis.
My cousin @MJOCrossfield was interviewed for “Lost Nation” in “Raising Spirits - Exploring the cemetaries, crossroads and vanishing places of rural Quebec”, release by the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network (QAHN) https://www.youtube.com/live/If4EgHz33G4?t=8762
I'm usually not one for sharing petitions and asking others to sign, but this one is close to the heart. The #heritage and #culture sector in #Wales has been chronically underfunded for decades, but the latest budget announcement was tantamount to an attack. Please help by signing this petition so that Welsh Govt is at the very least forced to discuss this on the floor and face up to their proposed cultural vandalism. https://petitions.senedd.wales/petitions/246088
🧐 How can computing help us, for example, to study people's opinions on controversial heritage?
In the next workshop of the #REWIND project you will learn about the IAT /ML methodology, which allows discourses to be analysed by combining ontological, argumentative and agency analysis.
Im Rahmen des europäischen Projektes #Choral "Contributing to the creation of #cultural#heritage through the choice of French as a form of #artistic expression" wird ein #Promotionsstipendium an der Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour und Università di Torino angeboten.
The Mesa Prieta Project is documenting over 100,000 petroglyphs on a mesa north of #Española. The densest concentration of petroglyphs is managed by the Archaeological Conservancy - http://newmexiconomad.com/mesa-prieta/
"This book brings together prominent scholars in the fields of international cultural heritage law and heritage studies to scrutinise the various branches of international law and governance dealing with heritage destruction from human rights perspectives, both in times of armed conflict as well as in peace."
"Chapters deal with high profile cases from Europe, North Africa, The Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, with a substantial afterword on heritage destruction in Ukraine."
And beyond that we #liberals and #antifascists have spent so long mocking The #Heritage Foundation that we've lost sight of the fact that the most powerful conservative organization wasn't all in on Trump in 2016 has now published essentially the American Mein Kampf in #Project2025
The introduction is ten pages long (out of 900 total). Read it.
There are two ways to enter the Sint-Anna pedestrian tunnel (1933), which connects Antwerp city to the left bank of the river Scheldt. One way is via the wooden escalators, the other way is via a majestic metal elevator.
Both options both bring you 31 meter down. The tunnel itself is more than half a kilometer long.
Kudos to Antwerp city and the Flemish region to keep investing in this cultural and functional heritage.
