I’ve said this previously: once Microsoft ends support for Windows 10, I’m switching to Pop!_OS.

My fear always was that a large portion of my game library would be unplayable. But Steam Deck has demonstrated that 95% of games—even games only made for Windows—are completely playable on Linux.

@atomicpoet I have been interested in Linux to help be a primary desktop OS, but gaming always stops me.
I have done long gaming on several games on Garuda Linux. It comes with a lot of tricks that the SteamDeck uses (also built off Arch Linux). The only reason I am not using as a main desktop OS right now is because I haven’t figured out how to do much with Xbox Game Pass and some of those integrations with other non steam games.

Thinking about my Linux installation, Garuda Linux. It's great, I mean really really good, but it's run by the type of Linux Elitists that look down on users like me and I don't feel particularly welcome or keen to become part of that community*. So I'm considering a hop to a new Distro.

I'm used to Arch distros now (RIP Antergos) and I really appreciate Rolling Releases so the first candidate that springs to mind is Manjaro Linux. It even has an unnofficial Gamer Edition "spin" (fork).

What's more, I could use Manjaro to obliterate that Windows partition that still exists on my SSD, preserving all the data in my Garuda Home directory and simply copy it over between the dual Linuxes. Then I delete Garuda and expand Manjaro across the whole 2TB SSD.

Two birds, one stone? 😃 Am suspicious, solutions are rarely this neat...🤔☺️

*Like the Fedi, the political attitudes of certain groups (Distros/Instances) tends to be something you find out after you've joined up. Distrowatch needs a checkbox for Linux Elitism 😁

My Distro is making the big leap to KDE 6.0 and Wayland today. Wish me luck! 😬

Well shit. I've been banging my head against the wall with this GPU switch from Nvidia to AMD. System tells me the most current Mesa is installed but there's no way it's working properly based on the performance I'm seeing. Tried reinstalling all packages which failed a bunch of times due to "pgp sigs" but finally succeeded and after a reboot nothing has changed. I guess I could try the "Pro" drivers.. I am thinking a fresh install is looking more likely tho. #Linux #Garuda #PC #Tech

Anyone knows how I can change the keyboard layout on my "decryption screen" ? I installed #Linux #Gardua but when I have to type my encryption key to decrypt my disk the keyboard layout is in qwerty and I use azerty.

I did not do that when I used #Debian before. It does that with #Garuda and #Manjaro so it may be an #Arch related issue ? 🤔

Thanks a lot !

Can anyone help with #Linux ?

I am stuck on reinstalling my work machine. I wanted to try either #Manjaro or #Garuda.

I follow the simplest install possible (I erase the disk, etc.). The only thing I do is I encrypt my / partition with #Luks

When I reboot, I am prompted to enter a decrypt password and then it says :

error: access denied
error: disk cryptouuid/... not found
Entering rescue mode....
grub rescue >

Without encrypting, it works. But I need to encrypt it.

I could really use some help.

#garuda enables sudo insults by default so i get output like

taco@myna ~ [13:12:52]

> $ garuda-update

[sudo] password for taco:

I fart in your general direction!

honestly i like being insulted by my terminal every time i get my password wrong, it's refreshing frankly

The Connect app to perform different functions between my laptop running and phone is pretty slick. The file transfer works flawlessly and I can mount my phone as a local drive over the network.

Still very much a baby #Linux user. Only just now finding out, with the whole Red Hat controversy, that not all distros are community run.

Might have to play some more when I get home after all. Red Hat has shown that "free and open source" doesn't mean anything when it's run by a company with a profit motive. Maybe someone can help me get #Garuda Dragonized look...less like Garuda Dragonized. The Mac-esque layout was such a bad choice.

Ah, sod it. I'm thinking about switching back to from .

Initially I switched because I needed the more up-to-date software, but it came with some annoying caveats (multimedia codec issues, NVIDIA driver updates, having to reboot after sleep). That, combined with the and drama, and at this point I'm feeling kinda home-sick for Mint :blobcatnotlikethis:

It's been a while, so hopefully the software is up-to-date enough for me now!

drwhut,

Installed Linux Mint, and... the headphone jack isn't working :blobcatgooglycry: Pretty sure my motherboard is too new for this kernel, sadly... sorry Mint :blobcatcry:

On the bright side, I get to start ! :blobcataww: I need a 6.x kernel, so I've got my sights on the following:

I heed you, Fediverse! How fare ye with these distributions? :blobcatopenmouth:

Tried installing #Garuda again. I don't like the Dragonized DE so I went with Cinnamon and promptly remembered why I don't like it. It's so busted, still can't pin applications half the time and half of the remaining time, pinned applications open a copy of themselves that don't stack with the pin. Little things like this drive me nuts.

Fun with a broken Linux this morning. Apparently a Plymouth/SDDM update has rendered many Garuda Linux installs unable to boot beyond the "Loading Ramdisk" line at the very start of the boot process, not even allowing for command-line access. Snapshots don't load either; only entering Recovery Mode works.

The workaround for now is to edit grub to remove the SPLASH text from the start of the boot commands. This disables/skips Plymouth. Or installing Plymouth instead of Plymouth-git (don't forget to rebuild intramfs if you do this)(TIL -git versions of software are considersd bleeding edge; comparable to nightlies?).

A timely reminder that Linux can bork itself just as much as Windows can/does.

- VERY nice! Feature-complete and easy to use for someone like me who is used to a floating window manager and DE.

There are mouse-driven graphical utilities for theming, power management, and more. keyboard buttons work OOTB, is here, it’s got a nice graphical app launcher, and it’s got gesture support. There’s also a well-stocked cheat sheet, but it’s a bit buried in config folders.

Looking forward to spending some time here learning about TWMs.

@thelinuxEXP can you make a video about #garuda #linux because it's a distro about performance and its have also a #gaming iso it would me interesting to see if its make any difference ^^

i'm trying to get more into linux, but windows currently has its grips on me. for those who converted, what made u convert all the way? (i'm dual-booting linux mint atm)

Uraael,

@synthphaser Finding that all the modern games I was playing on Windows worked equally well on Linux. That's always been the thing I needed Windows for. I was even on Linux when Steam launched proton and still went back to Windows.

Not any more, though. #Linux all the way, baby! #Garuda

As I had already made a "Tier List" video about desktop environments, it was high time I did the same for distributions.

Included are , , , , , , , , and a lot more!

I also tried to keep it more interesting than just "my face over tier maker", but let me know how well that went :D

@thelinuxEXP is my number one choice for a distro that “just works.” is my DE of choice for its easy customization & simplicity.

I wish that there was an good distro that was simple and easy like , because I really enjoy using it. makes me build all my apps, Arch makes me build my entire OS, leans too heavily on the AUR.

At this very moment I’m installing , which I’m hoping will be a good Manjaro alternative.

The benefits of using Linux over Windows are obvious; a truly Free and Private Operating systems that has zero interest in knowing who you are or profiting from that knowledge: an operating system designed to be responsive to your needs first and foremost, and to stay out of your way when you need it to: a system built upon the humanistic principles of free and open source software but that can still handle closed-source 'binary blobs' if you need it to.

Classically, every time I've tried Linux before (this is my fourth go at it) I've kept Windows around because, good as it was, Linux still had weaknesses. For me those centred mainly around Gaming, a vital part of my recreational life and one I need to keep around.

Since installing Garuda's Gaming edition of Linux last week I haven't logged into Windows even once, which has taken me by surprise even as familiar with Linux as I am. Valve's Proton and the gaming scene are so much more developed than last I looked and while there will be incompatible titles out there I feel I can expect more to work than ever before.

I implemented a complicated little plan to dual boot my drive...but now I find I'm wondering if I need to keep Windows around in any form. Garuda is just so good and so far it hasn't failed to do anything I've asked of it. Oh, I've plenty to learn yet and I've seen some inconsistent behaviour from it....but that's my exact experience of Windows as well.

As part of the installation process I cloned my original Windows drive to set up this new larger one, so the original drive is still around should I need Windows again. It's theoretically possible to wipe Windows from this one and move/enlarge the existing Linux partition-cluster to take the whole drive but even should that fail and I have to wipe and restart afresh it's not the end of the world. 🤔

Lots to think about but the prospect of finally being able to extricate myself entirely from the Windows ecosystem is a wonderful feeling already. #Linux #Garuda #Gaming #Windows
