Who cares? I mean, Google and the search engines have made money on SO already for the results just by ads alone. Why the stance now?

To be clear.... any public data is monetized....Don't fool yourself.

Federation (public) can be pulled and used for monetization too, because it is open by design.

bennysp,
@bennysp@fosstodon.org avatar

@mattsains @molly0xfff @ben @dangillmor

But when you search Google and find your answer on SO at the top, what made anyone think this wasn’t being monetized?

bennysp,
@bennysp@fosstodon.org avatar

@mattsains @molly0xfff @ben @dangillmor

I will go further... what makes anyone think offering an open license model solution that is public, will prevent anyone from finding a loophole to monetizing?

I’ve said this previously: once Microsoft ends support for Windows 10, I’m switching to Pop!_OS.

My fear always was that a large portion of my game library would be unplayable. But Steam Deck has demonstrated that 95% of games—even games only made for Windows—are completely playable on Linux.

bennysp,
@bennysp@fosstodon.org avatar

@atomicpoet I have been interested in Linux to help be a primary desktop OS, but gaming always stops me.
I have done long gaming on several games on Garuda Linux. It comes with a lot of tricks that the SteamDeck uses (also built off Arch Linux). The only reason I am not using as a main desktop OS right now is because I haven’t figured out how to do much with Xbox Game Pass and some of those integrations with other non steam games.

Out of my own curiosity, does Fediverse have a capacity limit problem?
I have always asked myself since joining (and seen with popularity of servers have problems with influx), will popularity kill small servers? Will only "serious" hosts survive? How does this play to fediverse/activitypub integrations?

(I am not trolling, seriously asking for information and feedback.)

christophertrottier, to threads

#Threads gets a lot of blowback for making federation opt-in on their service.

But from an admin perspective, thank God they’re doing that because if 120 million accounts suddenly joined the #Fediverse, this could kill many servers.

Meta might have the resources send messages from that many accounts, but many Fediverse servers don’t have the resources to receive all of them.

This is why resource efficiency is such an important concern for the Fediverse at large. Hence why I’m interested in building a community of #Akkomane enthusiasts.

@christophertrottier

Something I have thought about, but it needs to be solved, not ran away from. Can't have a social network with a capacity limit, otherwise, it is a failed system.

Everyone is talking about #potus on #threads like it benefits the #fediverse. Potus is on a centralized network ran by a #socialmedia #corporation. That Corp just happens to federate.

It would be more of a milestone if the #whitehouse created its own #mastodon instance. @potus would be way cooler!

So threads is now #federated. I know a bunch of people are upset. My question is how does it even work? How do you follow a #threads user from #mastodon?

bennysp,
@bennysp@fosstodon.org avatar

@fiend_unpleasant Just type their username in threads with @threads.net. BUT, you need to ensure they have fediverse turned on in their account settings. You can also search @threads.net in the search on mastodon to see who is already sharing to fediverse.

bennysp, to threads
@bennysp@fosstodon.org avatar

There are a lot of debates on and , but I am curious about the traffic/load.

Can anyone explain or is there a link to some data that explains what this will or will not do to data/traffic? Will most servers be fine or will they have to defederate Threads just because they cannot handle the load.

(Yes, I am aware that currently Threads is stating users have to "opt in" to Fediverse, but I am saying if all the users were to be "in" to the Fediverse)

bennysp,
@bennysp@fosstodon.org avatar

Also, to be clear, I have seen data regarding users fleeing Twitter and joining Mastodon, but what part of the Fediverse traffic causes the biggest impact to people hosting their instances?

I have to admit this year has been destructively stressful for me. I wish I could feel some sense of accomplishment about work done, but it's just not there, just this sense of a million other things that are urgently overdue and another million I'm forgetting.

This is the type of thing I see too often (me doing the same myself sometimes). A project, app or server goes silent because it was a single point of failure.

I can easily host my own mastodon instance (and I may, just for fun), but if I don’t want to impact users, it is better for me to join another instance with proper support and to donate to them.
