Uraael,

My Distro is making the big leap to KDE 6.0 and Wayland today. Wish me luck! 😬

#Linux #KDE #Wayland #Garuda

Uraael,

...okay. I seem to have survived relatively unscathed!

As per forum guidelines I've reverted my sweet custom desktop to the Garuda Dragonized default, mac-like top bar and 'Dock' panel (sigh), so I'll have to undo that again, but apart from that...

There's some flickering on 2D apps from Wayland but 3D is working beautifully which means no difference to my Gaming. Weirdly Vivaldi is badly hit but "Floorp"Dragon (FireDragon a.k.a Firefox) isn't affected at all. Score one for the Mozilla browser, I guess. Reading around it seems to be a Wayland bug so not much to do for now other than adapt or switch back to X11. I'll see how badly it's affecting other apps as I go before making that call.

First Impressions of KDE Plasma 6.0 = Niiice. Feels Faster in standard operations than 5 did. A Dolphin folder full of image thumbnails - boom - right there, rather than Plasma 5 taking it's time to work through them. Don't know exactly if that's a Wayland benefit or Plasma 6 goodie but I like it. Settings panels looks good, albeit very familiar.

Notifications are being handled by "emersion mako" instead of Plasma. I mention it because Notifications popped up and then wouldn't go away until I clicked them. A bit annoying. Currently looking for a way to tweak emersion. No obvious way at present. (Please don't be a config file).

Will report further as I go. Because I'm chatty like that.

Am back on X11. Another bug: it slows text entry to a crawl. Nope, I'm out. Will wait for Wayland/KDE 6 developments.

But that's confirmed that itself Plasma 6 is faster than 5. Everything feels snappier. Windows (lower-case), pop-ups, etc. This is really nice.

yuukayuuka,

@Uraael now the big thing to do is wait for 6.1 where a lot of the annoyances are fixed

Uraael,

@yuukayuuka Yeah, totally. 4 and 5 were the same.

And some of the Wayland problems seem to be Nvidia's slow/crappy wayland support rather than KDEs, so there's that too.
