I'm genuinely curious.. when I make #FOSS applications I always make it work according to my needs instead of thinking about making it usable for everyone else. Is this normal? Am I the only one who does this? #oss
Just had a #DogWalkFlashBack to '94, the week I first arrived in Aotearoa. I installed Linux for the first time, on my desktop computer (486 dx2 66MHz, 32MB RAM, monitor was 800x600 pixels, common at the time). I remember the giddy feeling of realising that I had actual real multi-tasking, and I could log into my system from outside the Lincoln Uni campus. Plus I could log into my old account at UW (Seattle) & from it back into my desktop. Heady days. People came from all over campus to see it.
30 years later, I still feel fortunate every day to have this embarrassment of riches that is #libre | #FOSS | #openSource (I vastly prefer #Copyleft) software, & that I've been been able make it a viable, even prosperous careers. Wer würde denn auf die Idee kommen, dass Waze auch ins Google-Imperium gehört? Ich erst mal nicht als Laie. Da könnte ich ja gleich bei Maps bleiben. Und bei Waze bin ich wohl teilweise sogar völlig gläsern, da andere Fahrer mich "sehen" können.
Was bleibt noch als Alternative, wenn man aus Google raus will?

The only thing more annoying than projects with a submit-patch-by-email workflow, are when they also require you to subscribe to their mailing list to prevent patches to be blocked on moderator approval. #foss

I logged in to Facebook a day or two ago to pin a post that basically said: "I'm still around, just not here. My email is ______ and here's a link to my blog. Stay in touch if you're so inclined."
I've had contact with a few folks. I really despise how FB has become so entrenched in my friends lives. I'd love for them all to leave it, but they're too invested.

I stopped posting about why people should leave a while back. I gave up preaching about secure communication and open source alternatives. Part of me feels like I abandoned them, but a big part of me also realizes that I gave them a means to contact me. I'll reach out to my closest peeps, anybody else...ball is in their court.
I'm just done supporting shitty companies. I'm a stubborn son-of-a-bitch when it comes to my principles, but it can make for a lonely existence at times.

Dropped some updates to selfh.st/apps this morning - tiles now have visible/clickable tags, URL properties have been added for sharing custom views with others, and I've added a ton of new project icons.
I'm completely open to feedback on future improvements, but probably won't consider adding any more details to the tiles to prevent them from becoming too cluttered.

Amazing effort and great idea. Reminded me of the archives that #Kiwix kept of it (alongside Wikipedia and similar projects), but more streamlined and cross-platform. Nice.
