Happy birthday to chemist William Henry Perkin (1838-1907)! This #lino print ‘William Henry Perkin Discovers Mauve’ is about how the British chemist & entrepreneur made the serendipitous discovery of the 1st synthetic organic dye: mauveine.

Perkins entered the Royal College of Chemistry in London in 1853 when he was only 15, studying with August Wilhelm von Hofmann. 🧵1/n

Interesting research on textile dyes in medieval Estonia:

& the use of local plants / lichen mixed with the woad, which was not the local variety but traded & widely cultivated across Europe from the #13thCentury. 🧵 1/3

I used to use Pelikan 4001 Violet as my primary #fountainpen ink in the 1990s, then J. Herbin Violette Pensée in the 2000's, before settling on Mrs. Stewart's in 2013.

Last night, I was thinking about getting an ink that would be a good match for mauveine dye, the first synthetic aniline dye brought to market, in the 1850s.

It turns out, Pelikan 4001 Violet is a pretty good, but so is TWSBI Royal Purple, and I've heard good things about the TWSBI inks. I have two TWSBI greens on the way.

was revolutionary, when it was discovered. No one had ever see a that vivid in human history, and the world went crazy for it. Queen Victoria of England wore a velvet gown to her daughter's wedding in 1858, and by the end of the decade, "mauve madness" had overtaken and society. Not only that, the commercialization of aniline dye chemistry would go on to revolutionize the pharmaceutical industry, as well.

Reserved our spots a long while ago - for a
This is in south of but away from the other places we'd visited* a few times. So a different set of trains & a bit of a walk (nice sunny morning with cool weather).
We'd seen info on chusen and at the Sakai traditional crafts museum - that had nice displays and videos. But we wanted to dig a bit deeper, especially for the kids to see

Thought the dog was hurt and bleeding all over the patio, but he just managed to step on some of my cochineal cactus bugs and was smearing it all over the patio. Looked exactly like bloodstains. #FalseAlarm #mashedbugs

#cochineal bugs were the main source of red dye back in Colonial times. "The Redcoats Are Coming" were really "guys in coats dyed in cactus bugs" are coming. #cactus #dye https://research.colonialwilliamsburg.org/foundation/journal/summer12/dye.cfm
