Happy birthday to chemist William Henry Perkin (1838-1907)! This #lino print ‘William Henry Perkin Discovers Mauve’ is about how the British chemist & entrepreneur made the serendipitous discovery of the 1st synthetic organic dye: mauveine.
Perkins entered the Royal College of Chemistry in London in 1853 when he was only 15, studying with August Wilhelm von Hofmann. 🧵1/n #linocut#printmaking#sciart#chemistry#syntheticChemistry#dye#histstm#chemist#FashionHistory#histchem#MastoArt
I used to use Pelikan 4001 Violet as my primary #fountainpen ink in the 1990s, then J. Herbin Violette Pensée in the 2000's, before settling on Mrs. Stewart's in 2013.
Last night, I was thinking about getting an ink that would be a good match for mauveine dye, the first synthetic aniline dye brought to market, in the 1850s.
It turns out, Pelikan 4001 Violet is a pretty good, but so is TWSBI Royal Purple, and I've heard good things about the TWSBI inks. I have two TWSBI greens on the way.
#Mauveine was revolutionary, when it was discovered. No one had ever see a #dye that vivid in human history, and the world went crazy for it. Queen Victoria of England wore a #mauve velvet gown to her daughter's wedding in 1858, and by the end of the decade, "mauve madness" had overtaken #fashion and society. Not only that, the commercialization of aniline dye chemistry would go on to revolutionize the pharmaceutical industry, as well.

Reserved our spots a long while ago - for a #chusen#dye#factory#tour
This is in #Sakai south of #Osaka but away from the other places we'd visited* a few times. So a different set of trains & a bit of a walk (nice sunny morning with cool weather).
We'd seen info on chusen and #tenugui at the Sakai traditional crafts museum - that had nice displays and videos. But we wanted to dig a bit deeper, especially for the kids to see
#cochineal#insects are doing great, if anyone is making wool uniforms for British soldiers looking to occupy Boston and needs some red dye, let me know. #redcoats#gardening#dye
Thought the dog was hurt and bleeding all over the patio, but he just managed to step on some of my cochineal cactus bugs and was smearing it all over the patio. Looked exactly like bloodstains. #FalseAlarm#mashedbugs
