Unfortunately I think I have to replace my Android phone soon, something I'm not excited about. I don't want to have a smartphone at all, but it's hard to not have one with the way things work in society. Extremely annoying and wasteful.
I’m looking for an Android flip phone. Something that lets me minimize the apps and stuff I use but can still install Matrix, and Signal on. It’s solely for connecting with people.
I’m thinking of the Caterpillar S22 unless someone else has recommendations, but it’s got to be a flip phone. Not a foldable a flip phone. I don’t want to do anything more than call or T9 text and this phone will only have close friends and family in it. #cellphone#android#linux#digitalminimalism
🆕 blog post -- Onyx Boox Palma - A great minimalist device
When I want to unwind and (mostly) disconnect, I shut down all tablets and computers. Then I pick up the Palma as needed to read, research, and relax. I only go online with it as needed and again, I'm very intentional about that.
@techlore I share the philosophy behind this and it's a surprisingly good attempt at #digitalminimalism on a relatively locked-down Apple phone without a lot of options.
Home screen can go more minimal on an Android by installing KISS launcher, which is a FOSS search-based launcher that doesn't require Google. This is what I use on #LineageOS. It also allows the home screen launcher/icons to be monochrome while apps can still be in color.
How do you practice mindful and/or minimal digital consumption? I have a goal of reducing my overall "connected" time and would love to hear what works for others! #mindfulness#digitalminimalism
So after wading into the debate yesterday based on an article written by @ploum (and posted by @dangillmor), and the larger #fedipact controversy, I decided to share a slightly more coherent version of my thoughts. I still think unnecessary #gatekeeping and preemptive #bans suck and will cause a helluva lot more damage to the protocol than Meta likely will, but as always, hope others who differ in their thoughts will engage in some healthy debate, and not just resort to calling me a troll for having a different opinion than them.
@privacat@onepict : that’s the very point why I use an #ungoogled phone, why I’m trying to be part of the #permacomputing community, why I’m arguing for #digitalminimalism, why I’m trying to shop as local as I can and to support small creators/local companies.
Your argument is a bit like the naive: "You feel the world is bad yet you live in the world, duh!"
Yet you argue than when we manage to create a small space without #Meta, we should welcome their invasion.
