I thought I might be able to install #linux on an old #Acer#chromebook, but after a few searches, it doesn't look like you can completely replace #ChromeOS.

With 2023 coming to a close, Iโm looking back at the last 12 months. As I do just before December ends, Iโm preparing to select my #Chromebook of the Year. Iโll be honest, Iโm finding it to be a challenge. Far more than usual, in fact.
Iโm sure you have opinions though. Even if you didnโt buy a Chromebook in 2023, youโve likely seen some #ChromeOS laptops or tablets that youโve appreciated.
For those wanting to use their Chromebooks as actual computers running Windows or Linux instead of the toy ChromeOS, you should check out the Chrultrabook project.
On Crostini, the Debian based Linux container of chromeOS, the SDL backend of Medley Interlisp starts up and runs faster than the X-Windows one. This is because ChromeOS is Wayland all the way down and X goes through Xwayland or equivalent.

Linux users have benefited from cross-platform frameworks like #Electron that make it easy to create Linux versions of apps like #Obsidian and #VSCode. The two biggest gaps are MS Officeโnothing else creates 100% compatible filesโand Adobe CS. Itโs more capable than #ChromeOS (you donโt have to hack it to run Linux apps) and ideal for anyone who doesnโt need Windows- or macOS-specific software.

Da molti anni uso chromebook per la sua leggerezza e il minimalismo, ma mi sono abbastanza stancata delle sue mille problematiche e della sua scarsissima longevitร (nonchรฉ di google in generale). Da molto non uso linux, e ho familiaritร solo con distro vecchissime di ubuntu e fedora. Sicuramente le cose sono molto cambiate negli ultimi anni. Mi consigliate una combo di sistema leggero e minimale, per un uso prevalentemente online / cloud, e laptop a bassissimo costo? Avevo valutato anni fa i pinebook, voi che ne dite?
