I thought I might be able to install #linux on an old #Acer #chromebook, but after a few searches, it doesn't look like you can completely replace #ChromeOS.

๐Ÿ†• post -- Here are the Asus Chromebook CM30 tablet details

Back in November, I reported that a new #ChromeOS tablet was on the way. I knew it was going to be the Asus Chromebook CM30 (CM3001), a follow-up to the companyโ€™s CM3 detachable tablet. Other than a few other details, such as a chipset upgrade, little else was known. Now, the #Asus #Chromebook CM30 tablet details are fully available online.

There is no operating system that I am not frustrated with.

I want my computer to "do."

I do not care why it does or how it does, just so long as it does without me having to fight with it.

When we finally have that, then you can tell me how advanced we have come technologically.

๐Ÿ†• post -- What's your pick for Chromebook of the Year 2023?

With 2023 coming to a close, Iโ€™m looking back at the last 12 months. As I do just before December ends, Iโ€™m preparing to select my #Chromebook of the Year. Iโ€™ll be honest, Iโ€™m finding it to be a challenge. Far more than usual, in fact.

Iโ€™m sure you have opinions though. Even if you didnโ€™t buy a Chromebook in 2023, youโ€™ve likely seen some #ChromeOS laptops or tablets that youโ€™ve appreciated.

For those wanting to use their Chromebooks as actual computers running Windows or Linux instead of the toy ChromeOS, you should check out the Chrultrabook project.

Here's their official forum that I frequent: https://forum.chrultrabook.com/latest
Please read the official guide for your Chromebook before posting: https://chrultrabook.github.io/docs/

Have a grand time with Windows, Linux or (maybe) OSX on your device! Keep on tinkering.

On Crostini, the Debian based Linux container of chromeOS, the SDL backend of Medley Interlisp starts up and runs faster than the X-Windows one. This is because ChromeOS is Wayland all the way down and X goes through Xwayland or equivalent.

These screen recordings I captured on my Chromebox show the performance difference of Medley between X and SDL:

@dhrystone For many people, desktop can do anything they need, whether they realize it or not. Linux users have benefited from cross-platform frameworks like that make it easy to create Linux versions of apps like and . The two biggest gaps are MS Officeโ€”nothing else creates 100% compatible filesโ€”and Adobe CS. Itโ€™s more capable than (you donโ€™t have to hack it to run Linux apps) and ideal for anyone who doesnโ€™t need Windows- or macOS-specific software.
