We've "progressed" in #IT so hard that we've come back to full circle to #timesharing systems. :chuckling_okuu: Replace the "mainframe" with the #cloud and replace the terminals with #smartphones and #chromebooks. :reimu_sigh:

Soon the concept of a true #personalcomputer is going to be an endangered species. :seija_coffee:

🆕 blog post — Working at Wawa

I made a conscious effort to lay low this month. After putting my #Chromebooks site on pause, I wanted to hit my personal “reset” button. So I did until now.

That offline time gave me a chance to think through some personal challenges. And one of them, a reduced income, is now sorted out. At least to a point. Earlier this month, I got a part-time position at my local #Wawa, less than one mile from my house.

⚠️ Denmark orders schools to stop sending student data to Google
— Bleeping Computer

"The matter was brought to the agency's attention roughly four years ago by a concerned parent and activist, Jesper Graugaard, who protested how student data is sent to Google without any consideration about the potential for misuse or the impact it could have on those persons in the future."

🆕 post -- How to install Firefox on a Chromebook the easy way

Want to install #Firefox on a #Chromebook the easy way? Until this week, #Mozilla officially said there are two ways. Neither of them is ideal.

But there’s a third way now that Mozilla is offering Firefox packages for #Debian and Ubuntu Linux. Since #Linux on #Chromebooks uses #Debian, you can directly download Firefox and quickly install it.

🆕 post — Why CES was a bust for Chromebooks this year

Every January, the Consumer Electronics Show sets the tech stage for the upcoming year. There are thousands of products launched, many of which won't even be available for a few months. And every year, I've seen ten or more new and devices. Except for this year. 2024 was basically a bust for new Chromebooks.

If you don’t mind a few feature omissions and simply want the #Chromebook Plus experience for under $300, I recommend checking out this Asus model. It’s not the most premium of the Plus devices. However, it nails the basics and has a current sale price near most entry-level #Chromebooks.

So, bad news. #Lomiri might take a bit longer than expected to port to #postmarketOS. Upstream is broken right now and we are working closely with them to fix the bug in qtmir created by the new Mir api change, but we are going to have to learn an entirely new graphics api to do so.

In the mean-time, I can confirm Lomiri runs perfectly fine on #Chromebooks, so... hurray?

@kellyn who writes about #chromebooks, #cordcutting and general tech

@simon_diamond, who geeks out about #photography, a lot

@LordofCandy who is a fellow former Altie, like me (you have to be in coffee online a long time to know that ref)

@dgar who gives me chuckles.
