We've "progressed" in #IT so hard that we've come back to full circle to #timesharing systems. :chuckling_okuu: Replace the "mainframe" with the #cloud and replace the terminals with #smartphones and #chromebooks. :reimu_sigh:
Soon the concept of a true #personalcomputer is going to be an endangered species. :seija_coffee:
I made a conscious effort to lay low this month. After putting my #Chromebooks site on pause, I wanted to hit my personal “reset” button. So I did until now.
That offline time gave me a chance to think through some personal challenges. And one of them, a reduced income, is now sorted out. At least to a point. Earlier this month, I got a part-time position at my local #Wawa, less than one mile from my house.
⚠️ Denmark orders schools to stop sending student data to Google
— Bleeping Computer
"The matter was brought to the agency's attention roughly four years ago by a concerned parent and activist, Jesper Graugaard, who protested how student data is sent to Google without any consideration about the potential for misuse or the impact it could have on those persons in the future."
🆕 post -- How to install Firefox on a Chromebook the easy way
Want to install #Firefox on a #Chromebook the easy way? Until this week, #Mozilla officially said there are two ways. Neither of them is ideal.
But there’s a third way now that Mozilla is offering Firefox packages for #Debian and Ubuntu Linux. Since #Linux on #Chromebooks uses #Debian, you can directly download Firefox and quickly install it.
🆕 post — Why CES was a bust for Chromebooks this year
Every January, the Consumer Electronics Show sets the tech stage for the upcoming year. There are thousands of products launched, many of which won't even be available for a few months. And every year, I've seen ten or more new #Chromebooks and #ChromeOS devices. Except for this year. #CES 2024 was basically a bust for new Chromebooks.
🆕 post -- Skip the touchscreen and this Acer Chromebook Plus is $299
If you don’t mind a few feature omissions and simply want the #Chromebook Plus experience for under $300, I recommend checking out this Asus model. It’s not the most premium of the Plus devices. However, it nails the basics and has a current sale price near most entry-level #Chromebooks.
🆕 post -- Here’s what’s in the ChromeOS 120 release for Chromebooks
The #ChromeOS 120 release adds several new features including a Virtual Desks button, pinch & zoom PiP resizing, custom keyboard \ mouse settings, and more. Here’s what’s new for #Chromebooks.
So, bad news. #Lomiri might take a bit longer than expected to port to #postmarketOS. Upstream is broken right now and we are working closely with them to fix the bug in qtmir created by the new Mir api change, but we are going to have to learn an entirely new graphics api to do so.
In the mean-time, I can confirm Lomiri runs perfectly fine on #Chromebooks, so... hurray?
I just sent the free, weekly About #Chromebooks email newsletter to nearly 5,000 Chromies. Click the link to read this week's news and considering joining the club!
🆕 blog post -- Debian 12 Linux upgrade for Chromebooks nearly here
#Debian 11 has been the version of #Linux on #Chromebooks for roughly two years. With the release of Debian 12 earlier this year, Google is readying a Linux upgrade to the newer platform. Get ready for the switch from #Bullseye to #Bookworm on your Chromebook.
I don't have enough exp. yet on #followfriday to give a lot of recs, and there's still not much in the #specialtycoffee sphere here I can recommend. But here's a few accounts I've enjoyed and engage with on various things:
🆕 blog post -- Here comes the Chrome browser Material You redesign
To celebrate the 15th birthday of its #Chrome browser, #Google announced a number of upgrades on Thursday. These include the Chrome browser Material You redesign, a new coat of paint on the Chrome Web Store, and ways to make searching the web easier. All of these changes will also filter down to #ChromeOS and #Chromebooks.
