*this wouldn't be a problem if they didn't become unusable after an "End of Life" date... which is "10 years from platform release date" (ie when your hardware was released...). If they didn't get locked and thrown in e-waste, and instead were loaded with Linux, we wouldn't have this issue...
@ai6yr That's it. I'm still running on a 13 year old Dell laptop from a past job, and it runs just fine with ArchLinux. But a 6 y-o phone, tablet or ChromeBook? Good luck. This is the problem when the OS has to be tailored to the hardware.
Various AOSP forks have made high distribution phones more usable for longer, but supported models are still quite limited. I'm still waiting to see something as effective as a Linux distro at supporting old-but-functional hardware for Android-based devices.
