Does anyone know where to get, or have, a Suzy-Q cable (Suzy-Qable) to disable write protect on newer Chromebooks? 🤔 Would need to be shippable to the US #chromebook #chromeos

Chromeos Will Run Two Browsers for Months (blog.crosexperts.com)

According to a recent webinar for ChromeOS devs, there will be two browsers running alongside each other for months on Chromebooks. One is the Chrome we're already used to. The other is the LaCrOS browser—a separate application more akin to the Linux version of Chrome.

A tale of 2 computers:
My ASUS Flip C302 was purchased in 2018, so is 5 years old, and I am now being told it is out of date with updates, including security patches. Although there are some options, I am unsure exactly what I am going to do with it.
My M15x A08 laptop was built and purchased in 2010, so 13 years old, and is currently running the very latest version of including the current kernel. It's like the laptop that just keeps on going!

"With a software death date baked into each model, older versions of these inexpensive computers are set to expire three to six years after their release. Despite having fully functioning hardware, an expired Chromebook will no longer receive the software updates it needs, blocking basic websites and applications from use…

kkarhan,

@mcc THIS kind of #ReducedLifecycle should be outlawed!

I can understand when manufacturers want to #EoL a #device (tho espechally on #ChromeOS / #Chromebooks the excuse of "too old hardware" rarely flies), the fact that these are literally turned into #eWaste due to not being unlockable and thus refurbishable (just like any other laptop) is basically an asshole move against both owners (that would otherwise get some $ from refurbishers) and the envoirment!

🆕 blog post -- First look at the new Microsoft 365 Chromebook integration

Early in 2022, I noticed a strange in-progress #Chromebook feature referencing “Web Drive Office Support”. This is still a work in progress, but with the recent ChromeOS 115 release, I see where this is heading. Here’s an early look at how your Chromebook will better integrate with the #Microsoft 365 productivity suite in #ChromeOS.

It's totally fine to despise chromeOS or Google. But this article makes the case Google's take on desktop Linux is, in fact, a desktop Linux.

🆕 blog post -- This is my favorite Chromebook read-later app: Omnivore

It’s called Omnivore and I prefer it far more to the native #ChromeOS Reading List app on my #Chromebook. That’s partly because I also use non-Chromebooks with a different browser, so the native Reading List isn’t available on all of my devices. And it’s partly because of the additional features Omnivore adds.

EXIF able is an EXIF viewer web app that works locally and is based on open source file retrieval and and EXIF reading libraries. A really handy tool on chromeOS, where Google's own photo and file products provide little or no image metadata.

Just discovered https://github.com/WICG/web-smart-card/ for teaching #browsers #SmartCard #PCSC instead of ... running pcsc-lite in #WebAssembly / #PNaCl over #WebUSB (for #ChromeOS) or exposing the #pcscd socket (e.g., Linux). Notably the #AusweisApp2 is mentioned as one use case!

I hope this gains similar traction as #FIDO2/#WebAuthn/#U2F/#CTAP support in browsers, especially with the recent push for #Passkeys, as smart cards are very widely deployed in orgs and slimming down the stack would definitely be a win here.

🆕 blog post -- There should be a successor to the HP Chromebook x2

Want a small #ChromeOS tablet with good battery life? I’d recommend considering the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 3, last year’s successor to my 2020 Chromebook of the Year. Other choices include… well, there really aren’t any other choices. Whatever happened to a follow-up from the HP #Chromebook x2, which offered stellar build quality and decent performance? Here's how I'd fix the original.
