🍄🍄 Schizophyllum commune, a fungus with split gills, has a small cap resembling undulating corals. The “gillies" vary from creamy yellow to pale white, giving it a unique appearance.

When we have negative tides some strange and otherwise inaccessible parts of the immediate coast become temporarily accessible. These are the cliffs near the "sea caves" between La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove. The magenta color on the rocks comes from, as far as I know, algae.
They are a biofertiliser, looking like they could walk, and they cooperate with plants, fungi, and bacteria. Often they help moss to survive. I held their small laboratory in my hand, "invented" by Earth about 2,5 billion years ago! https://www.cronenburg.net/nostoc/
As children we thought it was an alien invasion. The "things" could somehow move around. We often found it on the patio. Here they marched from the fields onto the path.😉
Indeed, #Nostoc or star jelly / spit of moon is a fascinating colony-building #cyanobacteria capable of #photosynthesis. Nostoc is a master of survival, symbiotic with #plants, #fungi, and other #bacteria. It can help moss to survive on bare rocks.
Stay out of the algae blooms in our lakes! #LakeWashington, #GreenLake, and other lakes around #Seattle have an unusual lot of #algae blooms for this time of year. This type of algae can make toxins -- and it can make people or pets sick.
Fortunately, you can keep yourself, your family, and your pets safe by looking before you leap, splash, or swim. Learn more at https://www.nwtoxicalgae.org. And remember: When in doubt, stay out!
Today was too much! New water tank is finally in… after a complication and call back. 😖 $4000 and a long day later and our family’s nerves are … kinda gone? 🤪 Worst of all some weird plumber dude thought I was some kind of lap rabbit and held me in his arms 🙄. -Skye 💕
[Editor’s note: Skye is safe here and we always watch her/supervise her closely, nobunny worry.😊]
> Is Regina water still yellow or did y’all sort that one out?
Green; it was traditionally green in the summer 😜 from the #algae in Buffalo Pound. They built a carbon-filtration plant back in the 90s that mostly fixed that, though they now say it's running over capacity and needs expansion or replacement.
Our water still doesn't taste great IMHO, but it's nothing like the #green#slime it was years ago.
Every year when the water is low and/or moving slowly, a photochemical reaction creates a moss-like structure. While these algae make the water unsuitable for consumption by humans, it supports bacteria that can be beneficial to aqueous flora and fauna.
Researchers created magnetic #algae robots (MAR's) to capture nano- and micro plastics from water. The algae contain negatively COOH- groups on their surface while at least some of the plastics carry a positive charge, helping bind up and eliminate the pollutants. #microplastics#research
🚨PhD opportunity🚨.Want to use biophysics to understand how algae🦠swim in #snow❄️, coupling to climate change? I have a fully-funded OnePlanetDTP project to study this in collaboration with snow physicists, algal biologists and ecologists, and photobioreactor company Xanthella.
Applications from underrepresented groups are
particularly encouraged.
Happy to discuss. Do get in touch! tinyurl.com/snowalg
I have been growing cuttings of Thai Basil because the mother basil plant started dying, and this morning I noticed that in the cup I was growing the cuttings in, a bunch of tiny balls of algae have started growing.
I've never seen algae grow like this other than marimo moss balls, but I can't imagine any way that marimo would have gotten into this cup. Very mysterious.

#NYT 📆 April 25, 2023, 12:50 p.m. ET It is now about 10 minutes after the touchdown time. #Ispace has cut to pre-recorded videos on its livestream. It only takes 1.3 seconds for a radio signal to travel from the moon to Earth. During the descent, the commentator mentioned that the signal from the lander had cut out. That is not necessarily catastrophic, but with the minutes that have since passed, it may be a sign that something went wrong https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/04/25/science/ispace-moon-landing-japan
