An important distinction is slowly being uncovered about the definition of the term "fediverse." Who is it that gets to decide what this place is? How are we being represented? These are not easy questions to answer and if we don't do a better job describing ourselves, then the job will get done for us by people who don't understand the underlying values we hold. #fediverse #meta #threads

@liaizon The second symbol would be much better for Open fediverse. It shows connections, has a O in its center that can be understood as a world and it is also minimalist. You can tell they paid someone who knows how to do his job.

The first icon isn't bad, but it is generic. It isn't as simple, nothing suggest that it is open, a world or universe. It could work as an Internet of things logo o anything else that is connected.

En el Parque Natural de la Zona Volcánica de la Garrocha, en Gerona, Cataluña, España, sobre largo risco basáltico se encuentra Castellfollit de la Roca. But it sure is a nice place to engage with curious, thoughtful & interesting folks in ways that I haven't experienced elsewhere online.

Rather than a chaotic circus, uniquely feels like a (mostly) friendly neighborhood.

Esto es una sola célula.

Se trata de Ventricaria ventricosa (Anteriormente Valonia ventricosa, un alga unicelular polinuclear con una enorme vacuola central multilobular. Puede alcanzar los 5 cm de diámetro.

La misma especie, pero rota y vacía. En las paredes se ven celdas hexagonales.

So uh... is YouTube really gonna start tagging videos that use AI so I can block 'em all somehow? The experience of seeing a video on an obscure topic that I care about then two sentences in realizing it's a computer voice reading GPT garble-warble is getting old.

Much like with art... part of what I'm interested in isn't just the content, it's the person who cared about it enough to make a video. I want to hear their voice and see how they see the topic. That's the whole point.

@futurebird It would be a very ill-advised action if, for having an artificial voice, videos were singled out or penalized. Artificial voices have been used since the early days of YouTube with Loquendo. There are many reasons to use artificial voice, such as disability, anonymity, simplicity or simply because using it is a valid option.

Looking at social media rn and I keep seeing articles about: ever larger, ever more-expensive cars, SUVs and trucks out-selling smaller vehicles, rants calling for the abolition of public transport, hate campaigns directed at cyclists, an insistence that driving is the ONLY valid form of transport—

The car industry is panicking. End of fossil fuel burners plus €10,000 for a car-sized battery pack equals end of a viable motoring economy (cheap second-hand cars can't exist in an EV future).

@cstross Maybe it's a similar trend to bigger smartphones. I personally don't like big phones, as they barely fit in my pockets, but for years now screens have been getting bigger and bigger and I can't find a smaller smartphone. The screen size of my current smartphone is twice the size of the first one that I had. It's crazy.😕

@cstross Of course, it is understandable and necessary. So it was a need that, to a greater or lesser extent, has been covered for a long time, even simplifying its use or being sold as feature phones. However, what I compare is the single option, having a huge smartphone or nothing.
