Well, Microsoft is getting ready to annoy its faithful Windows 10 user base with yet another prompt. This time, Microsoft wants Windows 10 users to switch from using a local account to their online Microsoft account.
Hi all. I've got an older #computer running #Windows10, and I'm thinking about putting #Linux on it since I've always wanted to try it out and think this computer might run better with Linux. I read a topic on audiogames.net about Linux #accessibility, and I saw a few recommendations for #distros to try out. To any #blind Linux users, is #NixOS a good one for a beginner, or should I try #LinuxMint or #Ubuntu? Also, what's the best way to install Linux and replace #Windows? Thanks. #technology#tech@mastoblind@accessibility@main
I have just had a message from Microsoft on my Windows 10 desktop that all support is ending for Windows 10 on October 25th.
My computer isn't compatible for Windows 11, even if I wanted it.
I am only moderately tech savvy, so I'm very nervous about installing Linux Mint ( recommended by quite a few blogs etc). Where would I find tech support if it goes wrong?
Edit: muting this now as I've had such a good response from all you super people.
I have no idea where to start. A friend is on #Windows10 and cannot receive cumulative updates from Windows update and is instead always being offered Windows 11 automatically, without having to press download and install, without having to accept license terms, and with no option whatsoever to stay on Windows 10. How do we prevent 11 from showing, and have the cumulative updates show instead? The one option is to go up to 11 then immediately rollback, but I'd like to avoid having them do that if at all possible and I'm not sure that changing BIOS settings is much of an option either. My guess is that kb4023057 was probably the culprit, but I have no idea (it probably modified something that's staying that way even after that update was removed). Thanks! #Windows#WindowsUpdate#WindowsIssues
Don't want to trash your #Windows10 machine? Who says you have to? There are ways to keep it working. Some of them will even let you keep running Windows 10.
[#Windows10 question] What’s a good free tool that does backup / #synchronization between two folders?
Specifically shows you which files are new or missing and allows you to copy them all?
For example I’ve found “winmerge”, is it any good?
🙏
Edit: it looks like FastCopy will do the job, thank you @moritz_negwer
To #blind#techies, does anyone have any suggestions for a pair of noise canceling #headphones purchasable on #Amazon that can connect to my computer running #Windows10, preferrably wirelessly or through Bluetooth. It's even better if they can somehow also connect to a second device and let me hear when my mom calls my #iPhone. This would be something I could use with my computer on days when our dogs are barking a lot so I don't get such bad #SensoryOverLoad. Of course, they need to also either not have software for the computer, or that software needs to be somewhat #accessible. My budget right now is about $80, but I may have up to $120 or so if I wait a day or two. @mastoblind#ActuallyAutistic#accessibility#iOS#tech#technology#Windows#WindowsTen
I took it off, and it's saving me a fortune in power, time and patience. Power especially! Those fans were running all of the time.
I don't understand how a user-level application is even allowed to lock the entire machine for minutes at a time and make it unusable after a while. That's some seriously bad #Engineering there and not at all #Environment friendly!
Sometimes, I ponder installing Windows 11 on my primary machine, even though I don't really like it right now on my secondary. Other times, I'm afraid that it will absolutely destroy my machine because I have so much stuff installed on it. What do you think? Go, or no? #Windows#Windows10#Windows11#PC#Computer#Tech#Technology
Today, I started my #Windows10 VM (4 CPU cores) for the 1st time after maybe 2 months.
While #Windows installed OS updates and rebooted, I set up a brand new #NixOS VM (on 2 CPU cores, half the RAM of the Win-VM) from an existing ISO image, activated flakes, copied my own #Nix configuration incl. #Homemanager and installed the whole system with many many tools (from the Internet repositories) and it was finished before the Win10 updates.
“If you’ve previously upgraded a machine from Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 11 or used one of these older keys, your activation status won’t change. You have a digital license that should continue to work. But if you were hoping to use this loophole in the future, it’s time to buy a legit Windows 11 key instead.”
My PC has just told me that it can't run Windows 11, but that Windows 10 will be out of support from October 2025. I have news for you Microsoft, I don't have a spare £1k (or even half that) for a new gaming rig just because you don't like mine. It'll be Linux for me if you force me.
Windows 10 will start pushing users to use Microsoft accounts. How to turn it off. (mashable.com)
