I got my son a laptop for school. (Refurb T490s!) He's not super technical but, after watching his mom struggle with windows, he wants Linux. Here's the question. Do I install Ubuntu since most Linux software works with it and it's easy to admin or do I install something else? (I run Debian and BSD on my personal machines.) Thanks! #linux#distros#question
Hi all. I've got an older #computer running #Windows10, and I'm thinking about putting #Linux on it since I've always wanted to try it out and think this computer might run better with Linux. I read a topic on audiogames.net about Linux #accessibility, and I saw a few recommendations for #distros to try out. To any #blind Linux users, is #NixOS a good one for a beginner, or should I try #LinuxMint or #Ubuntu? Also, what's the best way to install Linux and replace #Windows? Thanks. #technology#tech@mastoblind@accessibility@main
"The Fedora project is currently considering a change for future versions which would switch the default Workstation edition's desktop from to KDE Plasma. GNOME has always been the primary desktop for the Fedora, but KDE's Plasma desktop would offer a better experience. The features the proposal highlights are Plasma's system tray, Wayland support, and a reduced learning curve for new Linux users"
Anybody here run Debian as their daily driver? 🐧💻 Curious to hear about your experiences! Have you encountered any issues, and what do you primarily use it for?
So question is #fedora a problomatic #linux distro to use? I ended up using it mostly because projects like #nobara and #bazzite are based of it and I don't honestly mind how they work but I also know the red hat kinda isn't the greatest in terms of working the whole #foss deal.
As well is there actually any other #gaming focus #distros out there? I am pretty sure there the notable two?
Watching every video promoting switching from #Xorg to #Wayland gets me moving with a plan, later only to face multiple hurdles of medium to high complexity.
I mean I've moved #distros, and switched major tools and configs, but nothing has been as intimidating as this one. Realizing how much of my setup is indirectly #Xorg-dependent, it reminds me of my move out of #SystemD in favor of #Runit.
A Linux distribution is a similar concept to a phone’s app store. It allows you to download software that’s pre-vetted. This reduces the chance that it’s malware and allows the different dependencies to work together to reduce redundancy. However, you MAY optionally get software OUTSIDE of the package manager and directly from the software’s developer, through universal systems such as Flatpak, AppImage, or Snaps.
If you get software from OUTSIDE the package manager, then you’ll have double dependencies which takes up space and causes some minor delay in starting up the program. Many in the Linux community argue and debate over if the delay, space, and security issues matter, or if it’s more important to have software that works across distributions and is released faster. The delay on Snaps is worse than others, leading SOME to criticize Ubuntu which heavily uses them. This is why Mint is a fork of Ubuntu but WITHOUT Snaps. Others point out that without universal package managers, it can take YEARS for new software to make it to distributions with slower release cycles such as Ubuntu and Mint.
A Linux distribution is NOT the way Linux LOOKS. That’s the desktop environment! So if you like a distro’s software, you can swap it for any other desktop environment than the default. For example Linux Mint’s “Cinnamon flavor” look, could be put on Debian or anything else! At the end of the day, distros DON’T matter that much and anything is better than Windows… even snaps =)
Here's something I thought might be kewl to add to the mix :)
Now, I haven't vetted, tested, trialed, or reviewed #ZorinOS, but I have skimmed reviews in the past and it gets decent marks.
As with anything, YMMV, and remember, most newer #distros in the contemporary space really expect the user to do things the way the maintainers have intended administration, care and feeding, and operation to be performed - each distro may have it's own particular methods that require a bit of a learning curve peculiar to those intentions...
@solidtrax I see people using all kinds of #distros. There's some vendors officially only supporting #ubuntu and/or offer only #debian installers but I'd say that at the end of the day you can use whatever you like. I am using #manjaro. Maybe make sure you have #pipewire installed. In terms of native plugins you should have a look at @alf website Linux DAW: https://linuxdaw.org/
@kdenlive In my opinion #Flatpak is supposed to be the solution to make #Kdenlive running stable on all #distros. If that isn't working, there is either an error in the Flatpak software (or its design) itself or in the way Kdenlive and its dependencies are packet together or in the sandbox settings of the Kdenlive packet.
I've tried literally everything, Debian, Arch Linux 32x, Void, and nothing works. The only stuff I've tested and it actually ran was Windows XP and ancient Ubuntu....
I already showcased a few immutable #Linux distros, but never quite explained what they are.
As a lot of people seem to think they’re the future of the Linux desktop, I feel differently. Let’s look at what these are, the advantages and the drawbacks:
@thelinuxEXP with #immutable#linux#distros, users cannot uninstall or replace default applications because they are installed as #readonly. For me, this is a limitation not a feature and thus I prefer #tradotional linux distros in order to customise my desktop environment to my liking.
In dieser Woche gab es bereits zwei Artikel zu NixOS. Diese behandeln die Installation und die ersten Schritte. In diesem Artikel möchte ich ein paar Ratschläge und Anregungen für die Konfiguration des Systems geben.
