Yesterday an SUV nearly ran me over when I was crossing a street. There were around 20 seconds on the count down and it was obvious that it was a red light.
I stopped in the intersection after it very unwillingly stopped, and glared at the driver.
Ever since I personally witnessed two people being killed in front of me, as a pedestrian, here in SF, I have been radicalized. It’s a big fucking deal and it’s unthinkable to me that pols don’t think so.
"In 2022, cars killed 7,508 pedestrians, the equivalent of 18 fully-loaded Boeing 747s crashing with zero survivors. That means a pedestrian died roughly every 70 minutes, with no breaks in the tide of fatalities for weekends or holidays."
@haraldkliems@TheWarOnCars Oregon leg. voted but it's currently just a planning activity & we're maintaining the deadly status quo throughout the process. Reluctance to make #busLanes/turn-only the existing curb lanes of all four-lane #stroads (including ones #PBOT fully controls) is the actual hold-up. Cowardly leaders + traffic Engineers afraid to actually change, even though adopted #VisionZero and #ClimateAction plans purport to value safety and mobility over car speed and volume counts.
Memorial Ride & Ghost Bike for David Bentley: Saturday, March 30th, honoring the Portlander who was intentionally hit and killed with a car on SE Belmont near MLK. The ride will meet at 1pm in Waterfront Park near Everett St. #pdxBikes#VisionZero#Portland
RT @stevenfulop We are going to work to expand this citywide for school zones and high pedestrian areas - we have been a national leader in #VisionZero to eliminate car related fatalities on our streets and making the streets safer for pedestrians
According to Hyundai, “the tires of electric vehicles wear 20% faster than those of internal combustion engines, which is due to the acceleration of electric vehicles that generate strong instantaneous power.” https://www.hyundaimotorgroup.com/story/CONT0000000000050465
We must radically reduce the number of cars on the road but we're heading in the exact opposite direction.
@gerrymcgovern the front right tire on my used chevy Bolt was worn 3x as much as the others. The failure to control traction & torque causes excessive tire wear to people who just aren't adept at operating machines. But perhaps we could control cars using the infrastructure that we pay traffic Engineers to design & operate, roundabouts not stop lights. Certainly some cities could pull that lever while waiting for federal auto industry regulation. #ClimateAction#VisionZero#microplastics#EVs

Wann Fahrtüchtigkeitstests für Autofahrer:innen, Herr Wissing? #VisionZerohttp://sz.de/1.6478994
I don’t think so.
SFMTA: “There have been zero injury collisions on Ulloa Street between Madrone Street and Claremont Boulevard (inclusive) in the past five years. The one pedestrian minor injury occurred 130 feet south and involved a transient walking midblock. There's nothing to suggest this type of crash was part of a pattern. Our staff will be analyzing the area and see if improvements and recommendations can be made.”
There was a horrific crash here this week where an entire family was wiped out by a driver going 50-70mph on city streets prior to hitting a bus stop where a family was waiting for the bus to the zoo. We've already heard from the mayor that she isn't sure this qualifies as a Vision Zero issue, but IT IS no matter what the details are. We shouldn't have streets where it's that easy to get up to 70mph. My modest proposal for a street redesign: #sanfrancisco#visionzero
Study: "the designation of individual responsibility for crashes preempts collective responsibility, preventing wider adoption of design interventions as well as systemic changes to the processes that determine the built environment of US roadways."
Talking about whether or not an individual driver will be caged and for how long is actively distracting us from improving safety. #VisionZero#TrafficViolence
Over the weekend, I wrote about the multi-fatality crash in San Francisco which claimed the lives of a mother, father, and child, and left their other child, a three-month-old, in critical condition. Mayor Breed, SFPD, and SFFD all suggested that this incident somehow didn't count as a Vision Zero concern and that "traffic engineering was not a factor."
#dd0906
