One of the many arguments against allowing right turns on red is that it entices drivers to roll up as close to the intersection as possible, the better to see when a gap appears that they can dart into. This causes them to completely block crosswalks, curb ramps, and beg buttons.
It seems like a little thing...unless you need to use those facilities....in which case it's a BFD.
Opportunity to talk to the NE #Portland state rep directly about the importance of bikes and #transportation. Lew Frederick is on the joint transportation committee and will play a big part in coming up with the next state transportation funding. He has these meetups once a month but this is the first after the state transportation forum. 9am at the Broadway Grill. #pdxBikes#ORleg#ClimateAction#VisionZero
Imagine if most people shopping at WalMart carried a chainsaw, running full tilt. ( For some hypothetical reason, shopping took half as long with the chainsaw, than without )
Shoppers would hold the chainsaw out in front of them, and be very careful passing other people. But every now and then, somebody would trip, or sneeze, and cut off another shopper's arm, leg or head. Or maybe they just got angry, and then claimed they'd sneezed.
The news, the police and the safety officials would cluck and say "oh, no. This is so sad. We will dearly miss Aunt Mildred from Lincoln Avenue [ but mistakes will be made, and we understand that ]".
Some people could decide not to carry chainsaws, and accept that their shopping takes twice as long. But they are ridiculed, and told they aren't personally any safer without the chainsaw.
This is basically how we live with cars in our crowded cities.
RT @enobacon I've got that list of plate numbers for the cars with missing or obscured plates whenever you are ready to send these drivers a postcard @ tedwheeler @ CommMapp #pdxBikes, LMK where to send it or should I come downtown & read this into the public record 3min at a time? #VisionZero
Let's just imagine that we took the #ClimateAction or #VisionZero plans seriously, with the urgency to quit killing people for not driving (& killing plenty of drivers too), and some actual wish to survive as a species. NONE of the current plans are within 10x of doing it. You need a different strategy. Stop building for cars and just put the actual #StuffInTheStreet that you would 🚧 if you took the lack of network seriously & opened a city-wide project to fix it this year. #TacticalUrbanism
I'm not sure whether to celebrate the Portland gas tax renewal passing when it is still only a $0.10/gal, and basically means PBOT will keep doing what they've been doing, which is totally failing to act on #GlobalWarming or #VisionZero in any meaningful way while spending "safety money" on flashing lights that drivers ignore.
The contrast with failed #VisionZero plans like #Portland's seems pretty basic: "They said: 'You as provider of the road transport system are no longer allowed to kill people on that mass level that you've done'
#VisionZero has worked when the adopted plan actually mandated changes to infrastructure instead of wishes for "safety funding". Here, we let people keep driving after they participate in the city/state killing someone with their car, because "we all need to drive." If we're going to hold drivers accountable, we need to make it easy & convenient to get to and from the bar without driving, make infrastructure where bad driving will break the vehicle, require drivers actually learn how to drive.
More than a million people die on roads every year. Meet the man determined to prevent them
Almost 30 years ago, a revolutionary idea changed the way #Europe regarded road collisions. It has probably saved countless lives but it's yet to be fully accepted by politicians.
