#SCOTUS gave a win to the #NRA in its #FreeSpeech dispute w/a #NY state ofcl it accused of coercing banks & insurers to avoid doing business w/the influential #gun advocacy group.
"the case is notable because Fox Corporation—the parent company of Fox News— is directly paying the family of a Supreme Court justice, which neither Barrett nor her husband are required to disclose."
The rot in the court is a feature of the Federalist Society, not a bug. As long as there is a pipeline for FedSoc to put right wing activists into the court, you'll have this corruption.
Roberts already made the decision to defer to #Alito when the ethics code was watered down to get unanimity on it. Notion chief is going to step in now to create enforcement mechanism is fantasy.
“The clash between the wife of a conservative #SCOTUS justice & a couple…in their 30s & liberal…played out over months….the…shouting match…at the height of tensions over the #2020election…might have happened in any mixed political community in America.”
Amid the controversy, Ms. Baden said she was surprised to find herself playing a central role in Justice #Alito’s account….“I never saw the upside-down flag, never heard about it,” she said.
To better understand the clash, NYT interviewed Baden, her mother & her husband, as well as other neighbors, & reviewed the texts that Baden & her husband sent to friends after the episodes. Alito, who did not respond to questions for this article, has in recent wks given his own explanation….
There are some differences: For instance, Justice #Alito told Fox News that his wife hoisted the flag in response to Ms. Baden’s vulgar insult. However, a text message & the police call — corroborated by Fairfax County authorities — indicate that the name-calling took place on Feb. 15, weeks AFTER the inverted #flag was taken down.
“…Feb 15, the couple were pulling in trash bins when the #Alitos, …on a stroll, appeared. Mrs Alito addressed the pair by name, used an expletive &called them ‘fascists,’ the couple told NYT & said in texts at the time.Justice #Alito remained silent, they added….
“That was when Baden snapped….She does not remember her precise words, but recalls something like: How dare you behave this way? You’ve been harassing us, over signs. You represent the highest court in the land. Shame on you.”
In addition to saying "Not True" during Obama's 2010 State of the Union, flying pro-insurrectionist flags at two different residences, consider that after attending Trump's inauguration in 2017, Alito joined Trump in skipping Biden's inauguration in 2021.
Impartial, my ass. But Alito claims (and has) the sole power to decide whether he has a conflict of interest, without anyone being allowed to second-guess him.
“…Justice Kennedy found for the crt that the failure of an objectively biased jdg to recuse him- or herself is not “harmless error” just because the biased jdg’s vote is not apparently determinative in the vote of a panel of jdgs. A biased jdg contaminates the proceeding not just by the casting &/tabulation of his or her own vote but by participating in the body’s collective deliberations & affecting, even subtly, other judges’ percep of the case.”
Martha-Ann Alito SPIT at her neighbors' car. That is why the police were called. So, free speech for fascist but Alito wants their sign down, Alitos can fly their insurrection flag and spit at the neighbors.
Holy F S$%^
The "I hoisted the coup flag becaue the neighbors called me a nasty word" story never really made sense, but well...
"the justice told Fox News that his wife hoisted the flag in response to Ms. Baden’s vulgar insult. A text message and the police call — corroborated by Fairfax County authorities — indicate, however, that the name-calling took place on Feb. 15, weeks after the inverted flag was taken down."
Martha-Ann Alito approached the neighbors after a sign blew down several weeks later and expressed that she found it offensive.
The neighbors reported that during a drive past the Alito’s house on the day of Biden’s inauguration, Martha-Ann Alito spit at their car. The conflict continued for several more weeks, with both parties using strong language.
