Speaking of Prince, this musical genius should've turned 65 years old today.
So as a treat a thread with some lesser known favorites of mine, featuring Prince as storyteller/storysinger. Enjoy!
I've been listening to a lot of live #Prince recently and among many takeaways I'm wrapping my head around is confirmation of what I've long suspected - to my ear he was the greatest electric rhythm guitar player there's ever been. He was also an astonishing lead player in the post-Hendrix blues rock style of course, but his time sense was so ideal, so razor edged sharp that it could make an atomic clock feel sloppy, and of course his feel for funk and swing accents was quite literally perfect
Okay, here's a #Prince story for you: At this moment, on this night in 1984, Prince walked into Sunset Sound studios, and walked out 36 hours later having produced, arranged, composed and performed the entirety of When Doves Cry. 10 weeks later, it was released as a single. It became a Prince's first number one song, the biggest song of the year, and one of the greatest pop singles of all time. He was 26 years old. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG3VcCAlUgE
soooooo without further ado, it is now time for my all-prince music thread! i was thinking about going halfsies on it (half prince stuff, half related artists) but i'ma stick to just prince's stuff today. might do a related artists thread tomorrow if i'm feel i'm up to posting it.
this is my early #BlackFriday thread for this week, btw. let's fucken gooooooooo~ 🧵👇🏾
A cashier (who looked to be in her 50s) at a well-known grocery store said she really liked this shirt I’m wearing here—and after I told her that Paisley Park is Prince’s music studio in Minneapolis, she said she did not know who Prince was. #Prince
(1 of 2) #art / #history: i (stupid) wanted to keep it simple but there's something about prince rogers nelson (who died #otd in 2016) that pushed me towards excess - &, despite its critical roasting, i've always loved 'under the cherry moon'. prince in the south of france surrounded by delicious deco details? yes, please. if you know him at all, you'll understand why he still inspires such passionate tributes. #prince#mastoArt#music#minneapolis#vegan
Sigh. Usually when I unbox a product, I'm excited and keen, and the biggest problem is then getting it charged.
Except today. My copy of the Super Deluxe Edition of Diamonds & Pearls arrived... and it's rather lacking in the "Super" division, as is Warners Australia/Merch Fan (their agent, I think)'s response so far.
But hey, if you've ever wanted to hear me go from excited to disappointed within a span of seconds, this is the video for you!
my favorite prince album & era is "dirty mind", btw. as a kid in the '80s i would hear his music on the radio quite a lot, but i really didn't get into him and become a fan till i was a teenager in the '90s.
i discovered "dm" when i was spending the weekend over at my oldest sister's house. she had a MASSIVE collection of albums on cassette, mostly old-school R&B stuff. i would dig thru her collection so i could listen to stuff on the stereo she had. one time i came across a prince tape i had never seen or heard of before.
i was curious as to when the album came out, so i looked at the copyright year on it.
the album was as old as me. 😳
i was like "wow, he's been around this long? what's this album like...?"
i popped the tape in the deck, rewound side 1, and hit the play button. 30 minutes later, i was hooked.
I don’t mean to speak ill of #prince or #sineadoconnor, but I can’t help but notice that “Nothing Compares 2 U” totally ignores the similarities between uranium and other actinides like thorium that have comparable properties.
Went to the Guild Theater in Menlo Park last night to see a Prince Tribute band, When Doves Cry. Prior we walked by 639 Santa Cruz Avenue (Magoo’s Pizza location).
"Annie Lennox, Wendy and Lisa Working Together on Trio Project."
I find this a genuinely exciting prospect, given the Art Pop tendencies of all participants, and their eclectic tastes, the worst thing this could be is just 'pretty good', but definitely could be something far more ambitious and resonant given the talent pool.
I have a kind of theory ... The best creatives are not ones who are consistently good, but are ones who create so much that they can't fail to at least create some good stuff.
#Writers like (probably) #StephenKing (although I've only read a few of his books but I'm sure there are plenty of stinkers). And other prolific writers.
