How did I spend my morning? Since I'm in a "distro testing" mood, #nixos was running my CPU and GPU fans low (current guess), so my thermals were warmer than expected. I wondered if another distro would result in the same thing. Installed #popos for fun, half of everything locked up and I had to force quit, even to install a font! Installed Arch again and will be testing thermals shortly. More thoughts later...
New instance, new #introduction. I started on mastodon, but moved over to calckey for the extra features. Not wanting to be on one of the giant instances, I went for smaller, but had the bad luck of picking ones that shit down. So a few migrations later, I'm relocating here now.
At any rate, I'm just a guy in the #PNW that likes going on adventures and #travel, #hiking, and #backpacking. I'm also into #Board Games and #ttrpg, specifically #Pathfinder2e / #pf2e. While I've used #linux off and on for the last couple of decades, I recently switched to #PopOS and made that my daily driver. Online, I try to keep up on #privacy and local/national #politics without being overwhelmed or depressed... which is not easy to do.
I've got a black #cat named Nef, and sometimes find time for #baking and #knitting, though not as much anymore.
Should I reinstall my daily driver "laptop" with NixOS? (Quotes because it is semi permanently docked in a fabric sling below the desk. Technically it is portable.) I'm currently on PopOS and it's ... fine. Monitors work, 5.1 optical works, etc. I don't miss the excitement of Gentoo taking 14 hours compiling X11, but PopOS is adding just enough grit to my gears to be irritating.
I'm open to other ideas. There is nothing fancy about the laptop - Nvidia gfx, supported everything. #nixos#linux#popos
Sometimes (not always) when I try to install software from the Pop Shop, popos prompts me to authenticate using my fingerprint. Great! Except my fingerprint reader is inaccessible, under a closed laptop screen, when I'm using my desktop workstation.
Is there a way to get it to switch auth methods in the moment so I can type my password instead?
I picked up a lightly used ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 with an Intel i5-1245U, 16 GB of (soldered) RAM and a 256 GB NVMe SSD for around $520. It doesn't have a discrete GPU, but it's better that way.
The laptop only had a couple of minor scratches and the screen and power adapter was a little dusty.
I added a 32 GB memory module and replaced the SSD with a WD 2 TB SN850X for another $215. For around half the price of a similarly configured built of the laptop when new, I'm pretty happy with the setup.
It won't be my primary laptop, but it's thin and light enough to be one that I can take with me while on the go. I loaded Kubuntu 23.10 and using Wayland without issues.
The only thing I don't like is how tiny the F1-F12 keys are, the long power up time (from power on to the GRUB boot menu), and how warm the thing gets at idle compared to my M1 Max MBP.
My journey with Kubuntu on the laptop has ended due to random graphical weirdness that would appear as random white pixels that would flash along the top edge of the screen. This issue persisted in both Xorg and Wayland.
I am now using @pop_os_official with Wayland and no graphical glitches or anomalies have cropped up. It's not quite as snappy as 23.10 + KDE Plasma, but it's more than adequate.
Want to install #PopOS alongside #win11 but I can't find any good guides from the vendor or otherwise. I'd like to get all the nice PopOS features like a restore partition, but it really wants to wipe the whole drive and start from zero.
I am generally in favor of doing this but in this case, I need to retain the exisitng #Windows partition for a few weeks.
Edit: it would probably be easier to install PopOS and then shrink & add a Windows partition, but I want to keep the one I have now (and its corresponding restore partition).
🐧 #Linux lovers using @pop_os_official - @protonvpn's installation process for Ubuntu works on Pop!_OS too. Here's a quick guide:
1️⃣ Get the DEB package
2️⃣ Install the repository
3️⃣ Update packages: 'sudo apt-get update'
4️⃣ Install: 'sudo apt-get install proton-vpn-gnome-desktop'
Bonjour,
Et utilisation de #xournal++ .
I think i spoke too soon with regards to #Geary appearing to be working properly - turns out it's broke again! It suddenly can't connect to my mail providers IMAP server despite working fine earlier today.
Even after rebooting the laptop still having the same problem and no way to troubleshot the issue. I know there is nothing wrong with the credentials because i'm receiving mails fine on other devices/clients.
I installed Pop!_OS and I have been enjoying playing around with it. It seems that Linux hates my integrated and dedicated GPU combo and refuses to output correctly to an external monitor. Irksome, but not a major issue as I don't think I will use it to game. Windows will remain for that.
What is more annoying is that two finger swipe was working as "backwards" for all of my browsers and then just seemed to stop a couple of days after install. Any tips for this?
I've configured my desktop to dual boot #popos and #windows. I have a goal. I want to phase Windows and commercial software out of my life as much as possible.
What's the latest thinking on installing software on #Linux? Should I use #apt and connect directly to repositories? I'm using #PopOS and their "Pop! Shop" uses flatpak. Personally, I think I prefer using their flatpak thing but am I missing a benefit from using apt?
Got Pop!_OS up and running in dual boot. Seems to work beautifully with my new PC. Will this finally be enough to get me to switch from Windows as my daily driver? #linux#popos
Since I began using #Linux 3 years ago I’ve been using #gnome’s email client, #geary, for my gmail account. Lately it’s using lots of cpu, even when gui isn’t open, heating my laptop. Also there have been other occasional hiccups and wonky stuff.
Any suggestions for a desktop email client for #PopOs (using their DE)?
Being a Firefox user my inclination is toward Mozilla’s #Thunderbird. Other suggestions?
with stuff like Linux, it asks you to make an investment in time and effort instead of money as with Apple. it's an expense no matter how you view it. something has to be endured to make Linux work just right for you, but same with Apple stuff. just different forms of payment.
@nixCraft I landed on #ubuntu Mate a while back. Driver support is solid and the GUI is just the right amount of customizable. #popos does seem really neat tho.
can someone fork #ubuntu and make it all exactly the same except no #snap? so that the package ecosystem works with minimal friction? using #popos instead almost works but there's still some incompatibilities
