I am blown away by #Jolla's new subscription model... I can understand why it is necessary, but at this point I would go with #PlasmaMobile with #PostmarketOS: open source as I wish #SailfishOS was
It's been almost 5 years but I've written a new blog post again! This time describing my setup for daily driving #PlasmaMobile on #postmarketOS after a bit more than a week of using it.
I finally decided to get a proper second device to run #postmarketOS on, so I bought a Pixel 3A! Fully mainline and #PlasmaMobile is very fluent on it, it's great!
I'll keep my sim-card in my Android phone for now but I'll use it to browse the fediverse (#Tokodon), watch YouTube (#Plasmatube), browse the web (#Angelfish), chat on Matrix (#Neochat), etc. I'll probably find a ton of bugs, so let's get these reported and fixed!
I gave KDE Plasma Mobile another go. It improved a LOT over the past few months. No crashes yet! It's a lot more stable now. Although not as stable as Phosh.
I like their whole "just copy Android" philosophy. Everything feels familiar and intuitive. I might keep it like this.
Thank you for your reply. No, I hadn't heard of Plasma.
I've tried MS alternatives repeatedly, but neither Linux (2 business SW apps explicitly do not support Linux) and #LibreOffice is either too unstable with my many old #Word docxs I use as templates , not really compatible with my HP printer (keeps losing the settings every time) or no alternative for...
...advanced high-performing Excel applications.--So, no go on the PC 4 me.
Re/ the smartphone, I have been looking for a very stable(!) replacement OS for 2 older Samsung smartphones, which will not update anymore (OS + many apps).
Dead end so far, too.
Plasma Mobile will therefore not be for me either, as it isn't really reliable for what I'm reading.

Attention people in Southern California! KDE is coming to town (to set up a booth a SCaLE21x).
Come visit us at @socallinuxexpo at the Pasadena Convention Center, enjoy some talks, meet KDE contributors, marvel at our technological... er... marvels, and have a good time!
PS: Be warned. I was always bad at doing videos, and this time I decided to be extra quick in preparation and production, so it's worse. Also, I barely practiced in 2 years, which does not help. (I only did this because I could not find any video of Plasma Mobile today.)
KDE releases today Plasma Mobile 6. Check out its renewed base system and apps.
This version comes with a new and improved shell, a new home screen with heaps of new features, enhancements of the base system, improvements in apps like Clock, Kasts and Photos, and much more.
I should be onsite and mostly in the Career Village or one of the social areas from 2:30pm onwards, but am more than happy to dash about give folk a taste of #LinuxMobile
I don't work for Purism, Pine64, nor postmarketOS, I just noticed there's maybe an unmet demo interest and happen to have the HW while I'm at this hacker con
Decided to add textboxes to the rest of the options in the settings app so that they can at least be graphically configured for now, even if it's not optimal. There's more in the start+theme page, but I didn't take screenshots of it. Please note that there's a bug with the #PlasmaMobile keyboard where closing it with the navbar button breaks opening it again until you reload the page.
Did you know #postmarketOS has been shipping nightly built #Plasma6 packages for a while now? It has been useful so far for #plasma developers to develop and make #PlasmaMobile Qt6 ready, but it's also a great way for more experienced users to help test out KDE and catch bugs early!
Looking forward to Plasma Mobile 6 coming out as stable so I can mess around with it and finally get some of my stuff integrated into a usable session instead of everything being apps that run in a plain window. Friendly reminder that panels and launchers are just applications (give or take) that you can develop like any other program, and that this realization is what made me understand that I can do my own shell stuff.
