One of my #PhD papers got selected for the 2022 Best Paper Award of MDPI Computation! 🖖🥳📃🏆
That was a very bold publication for multiple reasons:
I solo-authored it
I wrote that paper in only 2 weeks
the title contains "Esoteric" twice
I submitted it on April 1st
It's serious science though: I discovered a simple algorithm to cut memory demand of the #LBM in half, allowing huge simulations on cheap #GPUs. This is one of the key innovations in #FluidX3D#CFD.
Today is the first day where I’ve felt doubt about doing my #PhD. Up until now I’ve loved it. I know it’s just depression warping my thoughts, but I feel like walking away. I will walk away until Monday, hopefully then I’ll be ready to get back in the saddle #phdlife
Hello sugar people of the :fediverse: . My former collegue Bernard Henrissat now in 🇩🇰 is looking for a #PhD student in a Marie Sklodowska-Curie 🇪🇺 training network to work with him at the Technical University of Denmark. More info: https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/201030
The deadline for application is May 31st, 2024 and the job will start in November.
Skills desired: #bioinformatics, general biology (++ #carbohydrates) and fluency in 🇬🇧.
Eligibility: the candidate should not have worked in 🇩🇰 before.
This week, I had the opportunity to present my #PhD research at the UCF Research Symposium 2024. It was great to see so many people showing the interest in my work on assessing the socio-economic impacts of compound #flooding for U.S. coastal communities. It’s always rewarding when your work sparks genuine interest and discussion. I appreciate the thoughtful feedback that will surely refine my future research.
Good morning! Rainy and chilly here, just 6°C with a predicted high of 8°C - not very spring-like. This morning I will be working on some key documents for my main research study, then in the afternoon I have a workshop on getting the most out of progress reviews (my 1st one is coming up). Before all of that I have to honour Miss Cinnamon’s request for a snuggle. She’s dozed off lying on my torso with her face in my armpit #PhD#phdchat#cats
Day One of our cozy @ieeevis writing retreat has kicked off at the Northeastern Roux Institute campus in Portland Maine! Excited to see what folks submit this year 😍
Delighted to be able to publicise a paper that was presented at the @ALTAnlp 2023 Workshop at the end of last year, co-authored with my #PhD supervisor, Associate Professor @eltwilliams, and written as part of my research at #ANU School of Cybernetics.
Titled "Right the docs: Characterising voice dataset documentation practices used in machine learning", it combines both exploratory interviews and documentation analysis to characterise how large voice datasets - e.g. #LibriSpeech, @mozilla's #CommonVoice, and several others, document their #metadata.
Unsurprisingly, it finds that the #dataset#documentation practices seen currently do not meet the needs of the #ML practitioners who use these datasets.
We show, once again, in the words of Nithya Sambasivan - "everyone wants to do the model work, but nobody wants to do the data work" ...

The Sustainability Ambassadors Global Exchange (SAGE) Program is back!
We are thrilled to announce the SAGE PhD Fellows program! This 3-year program is intended to nurture future impact leaders in solution-based sustainability research projects co-created with communities and consortia members.
I currently live in the #EU, #finland and I’m considering going to the #US for Ph.D., and I don’t know exactly how to make this decision. Anyone who has done a scientific #phd could give some hint on that?
At 2pm I will join an online session for reviewing my #kanban board and using it to plan for the weeks and months ahead. This will be especially useful today as I came away from supervision with a new list of tasks! #PhD#phdlife
Of course supervision was fine, in fact better than fine, it was great, she told me ahead of my formal six month review that I have ticked all the boxes so far and we made some exciting plans for the next six months. The time is going really quickly… #PhD#phdchat#phdlife
Fully funded PhD project to work on current natural selection, evolution and demography in several population of Albatrosses, with fieldwork in the subantarctic.
🚨 Help needed: Are there here any (former) PhD students who did a cotutelle between the Netherlands and Germany (specifically these two countries) and could help me finalizing a contract for my PhD student?
CONGRATULATIONS DOCTOR LAURA SOUTH on a successful #PhD dissertation defense of "Designing for Photosensitive Epilepsy Across Social, Interactive, and Immersive Platforms"! and to Dr. @michelle_borkin for the immense achievements of your student! #DataVis#HCI#a11y
Morning. Sleepy again. Having so much trouble getting up in the morning, I went through a long phase where I could get up and exercise and shower before work, but that seems like a dream now. Anyway I am up and ready to continue work on my ethics application. So much paperwork involved! I’ve already done my interview schedule, participant information sheet, risk register and consent form, now I need to complete my study protocol, which is a very lengthy document. How are we all? It’s a wet Wednesday in Wales #PhD#phdlife
Half thinking of starting an #AcademicVenting hashtag here, about the dire, dire state of UK (global?) higher education. Sharing nuggets of senior management decisions, neoliberal language, and overall slow collapse.
Won’t work of course because most of us can’t risk honesty, but honestly: the everyday reality of what is happening deserves recording in all its depressing and damning detail. #Universities#AcademicChatter#neoliberalism
