I needed a small Linux computer to run rtl_433 and remembered these Pi Model As, left over from some long ago client's project.

I guess it's admirable that the Pi foundation still supports 10+ year old hardware, unfortunately it's a real struggle in 256MB of RAM.The Debian Bookworm-based minimal install actively swaps to the SD card whenever it does anything at all..

OpenWRT to the rescue! Has pre-built images for the Pi SoCs[*], serial console by default, uses a fraction of the RAM and an impressive amount of software is packaged for it. ✨

[*] For Ethernet on the A then you probably need to build a custom image with the right kmod-usb-net-XYZ module for your adapter.

Hey fedi - does anyone own a GL.iNet GL-E750 V2 (Mudi V2) and can help to make it officially supported by OpenWrt?
I am looking into getting a travel modem/router for a trip and would really like to have an option to go for a completely FOSS OS/firmware.

I may write a client library to automate/replace clicking around the web UI of the router my ISP provided (Nokia HA-140W-B). I'll check for existing implementations first, or frameworks I can adapt #HyperOptic #Python

@alex you could replace their router with your own more feature rich router :) the Nokia seems reliable and ok but nowhere near as nice as something competent running

A question for the #network-guys here:

I've got the 192.168.1.x network with HA in there. Now, I've got an #OpenWrt router with the IP 192.168.1.190 creating 2 new networks: 192.168.100.x. I now want to get the HA into the 192.168.100.x network, but I can't connect it physically, as both the OpenWrt and HomeAssistant run in containers/VMs on #proxmox. I tried experimenting with IP routes, but no success. Does anyone have a clue for me?

#permacomputing #hardwarehacking question

Bg : I’m in the process of upgrading my internet, switching to full fibre rather then old broadband.

I’ve now got a spare old router which should run #openwrt (plusnet 270N), I’ll likely upgrade the ram chip as a side project and perhaps the rom as it’s technically fairly easy.

But the question is what to actually do with it, I’ve already got most of the projects you find on the internet, any off the wall ideas? I’ll have serial, 1/2

So - what hardware is the shit to go with in 2024 for #openwrt ?

I'd like to seperate Router and Access points (and have cables between them).

The system needs to be fast enough to deal with a 1Gbit Internet uplink.

Currently i have a buffalo router and that thing gets too old.

🦉 💻 Freie Router-Firmware für mehr ( Folge 369)

yewtu.be/watch?v=EeKuqHYCNe0

Btw. my patch/fix for the weird #Linux #bridge #multicast snooping issue, where it'd stop snooping after 248 days of uptime on 32 bit devices (observed on MIPS on #OpenWrt at least, not sure what else uses CONFIG_HZ=100), got merged. And also made it's way into stable kernels already. And should land in OpenWrt with the next kernel bump.

And... cough... it was a bug in another fix I made more than a decade ago... (am I getting old? :D )

I'm behind a 1GBit fiber connection from NTT. Took me years to get aware that I can replace their "home gateway" (where one plugs in the fiber and gets network out via 4 rj45 connectors) with a plain modem, and then run an own router behind that.
I did the switch this week, works really nice, recommended! Thanks to #OpenWRT on the router, I get traffic stats and more.
Just IPv6 setup took a bit longer: no delegation of a whole network segment is done, but DHCPv6 relay on the router works.

. I've been in a GPU and PC building rabbit hole.

Now I'm digging another one, this time around home network wired routers...

I'm kinda tired of managing low end low storage router...😅

Nothing against OpenWRT, it's been very stable and useful and I could go with it again, but I'm also open for a change...

Looking for a for a system, ideally with a powerline backhaul (though maybe WiFi 6 makes that unnecessary?). My router handles the main network stuff like fibre uplink. DHCP and DNS, so no need for that, but multiple VLAN support would be good so I can make a proper isolated IoT network as well as guest. Any recommendations?

I’ve got an aging Deco P9 system which has been ok, but more open and expert-friendly would be better!

CenturyAvocado,
@CenturyAvocado@fosstodon.org avatar

@Floppy Power line stuff is awful. I would actively avoid it given the experiences I've had of it. A decent mesh system with dedicated backhaul radio and well placed mesh nodes is the best bet. You could roll your own with devices which support #OpenWRT and enable 802.11s, otherwise I would go for high end #Deco devices and deal with the app/limited admin abilities.
Or potentially #Linksys #Velop, though I believe they are costly or difficult to source depending what country you are in.
