globalc, I'm behind a 1GBit fiber connection from NTT. Took me years to get aware that I can replace their "home gateway" (where one plugs in the fiber and gets network out via 4 rj45 connectors) with a plain modem, and then run an own router behind that.
I did the switch this week, works really nice, recommended! Thanks to #OpenWRT on the router, I get traffic stats and more.
Just IPv6 setup took a bit longer: no delegation of a whole network segment is done, but DHCPv6 relay on the router works.
