#Morocco is grappling not just with the loss of lives from the recent earthquake, but with the destruction of its cultural heritage – among them a 12th-century mosque in the village of Tinmel.
For nearly 900 years, Tinmel was central to a distinctly Moroccan Islamic tradition, but the quake has thrown its future into doubt.
People have been asking us today how long the tremors from the earthquake lasted, and we found it impossible to say. It didn’t take long, and yet it seemed to go on forever. According to CNBC, it lasted only a few seconds, but it seemed much, much longer, maybe 30 seconds? #MoroccoEarthquake

Friends, I'm going to make a personal request: please donate to one of the following fundraisers to help survivors of the earthquake in Morocco.
I spent 2 years living and working in a rural town in L'Maghreb. The people and the places there shaped so much of who I am today, and are precious to me, even though it is not a place I can easily visit these days.
So many of the homes and buildings outside the big cities were made of simple cinderblock and mortar construction, and were not designed to survive even a mild earthquake. We used to talk about what would happen the day this earthquake would hit, and everyone knew it would likely kill thousands. Moroccans will be out there helping their friends and family, with the deep generosity and community-mindedness so many have there, but they have been deprived of a lot of resources up until now, and the French organizations that are going to fundraise off this are only going to be half helpful.
My former Arabic teacher is a Moroccan who organizes tourist experiences that are actually invited by local communities and give people a chance to have meaningful cultural exchange experiences in areas like those hit worst by the earthquake. His organization has started a disaster relief effort in coordination with the communities he works with.
I can say he is someone I trust and respect a great deal, and really encourage anyone with a bit of money they can afford to give to send some to this disaster relief effort.
Just boarded and waiting for takeoff. The people next to me were staying in a guesthouse in the medina with no one else there except the night watchman who left without them. They spent the night among rubble with the local residents. So you see we had it easy #Holiday2023#Marrakesh#Morocco#MoroccoEarthquake
We’ve reached the airport gate but boarding isn’t for over an hour. The Wi-Fi is terrible so I’ve just paid a fortune for data. We only saw a couple of seriously damaged buildings on our way here, but I’m seeing picture of inside the medina on the news and the earthquake has taken a terrible toll on the area including the famous Jemaa el Fnaa mosque. Seems like everyone in Marrakesh slept outside last night, people were sitting in groups under makeshift tents on public green spaces. I really, really hope there will be no more aftershocks #morocco#moroccoearthquake2023live#MoroccoEarthquake
Current reports say that more than 800 people have died & hundreds are injured. The quake struck after 11pm, when most people are at home and in bed.
"#Morocco’s geophysical centre said the #quake struck in the Ighil area with a magnitude of 7.2. The US Geological Survey put the quake’s magnitude at 6.8 and said it was at a relatively shallow depth of 11.5 miles (18.5km)."
Moroccan authorities said they had “responded favourably” to offers of help from visiting #SearchAndRescue teams from #Spain, #Qatar, #Britain and the #UnitedArabEmirates, but were yet to accept further offers of aid from other countries despite the urgent nature of the disaster. #Morocco#earthquake
"French officials have tried to play down any rift between the two countries, which is centred on the issue of #WesternSahara, which #Morocco wants #France to recognise as Moroccan.
An enormous cloud of dust engulfs dozens of survivors and emergency teams who have descended on the town of #TalatNyakoub, at the epicenter of the #earthquake.
There is hope that loved ones didn’t die when the quake hit the #AtlasMountains here in #Morocco, but the smell of dead bodies is at times overpowering and the grim faces of rescue workers speak volumes.

An unfortunate reality of our moment is that (1) lots of us feel powerless to help deal with the various disasters floating around us and (2) there are lots of such disasters, often so bad they impact our physical (mapped) world.
