Here is my new GNU/Linux distribution guide about Debian KDE 12, the right GNU/Linux distribution for professional digital painting in 2024! Also about three major problems with GNU/Linux distros that will drive away all professional artists, IMO, and how I got kicked out of the Fedora KDE ecosystem with F40, which imposed Plasma6 and Wayland. I hope it helps other artists here!
I've used #MacOS for my day-to-day work for a good 35yrs. I've had a couple of brief clusters of years where I had to use a Windows at work (but still had MacOS at home).
I've installed #Linux on many old machines to extend their lives a bit, sorting through distros, finding one that would work on limited resources with good results. Fun stuff.
But I'm curious to ask a QUESTION about new computer purchases…
I'm doing another one of my little surveys, this time to see which parts of using #Linux on the desktop are the most problematic, and the various issues people are having.
I'll make a video on these results next week, and depending on the answers, maybe I'll make more videos on specific issues, either to explain these topics, or to see how we could improve.
So, here is the form, feel free to fill it out and share it around, so we have as many answers as possible!
If I were to buy a new laptop with some version of newbie friendly linux preloaded, intending to use it for music and graphics arts (not gaming), social media, and regular LibreOffice type stuff (and affinity, audacity, etc), what laptop would I buy with what version of linux?
Seriously looking into Linux for my PC because Microsoft and their overzealous approach to AI is making me nervous as heck.
I'm going to settle on Ubuntu as my familiarity with that Linux distro is high enough; I do need to check for any major changes with CLI commands, reworking of OS features, and the like before switching over. I don't want any surprises.
Over the next few days, I will back-up anything I need in the future digitally.
The new Linux phone from Jolla & its benefits? ⛵ :linux:
◉Sailfish OS - the only independent commercial mobile OS
◉Sailfish is NOT 100% closed source - Jolla plans to open the remaining blobs
◉More "Linuxy" than Android; Qt / Wayland / filesystem
◉Free of Google / Apple
◉Use Android compatibility in case an :android: app is needed
◉Jolla is a Finnish company - 🇫🇮 / 🇮🇸 are considered most trustworthy nations in Europe
'" The data shows that “frozen” vendor #Linux kernels, created by branching off a release point and then using a team of engineers to select specific patches to back-port to that branch, are buggier than the upstream “stable” Linux #kernel created by Greg Kroah-Hartman. '"
Satya Nadella says Windows PCs will have a photographic memory feature called Recall that will remember and understand everything you do on your computer by taking constant screenshots. This is a great reason to ditch windows altogether. Switch to #Linux 🧑💻 They don’t care about your privacy or safety anymore and not hiding it either. Anyone who is reading this plays #Linux games on their TV in the living room? What's your setup? Do you just have #SteamDeck hooked-up with a dock or do you use Steam Link software on your TV to stream #VideoGames from your gaming PC or do you have a "Steam Machine" type of a dedicated device just for TV #gaming? I wish to hear about it.
Few months back #Microsoft Teams stopped supporting #Linux, and their nasty argument was "you can use our web app from your browser". Today I got this in my browser which is #Firefox.
Unfortunately I have to use Microsoft Teams because my university and the audience all have contract with Microsoft 🙄
Yeah, keep fooling yourself that :microsoft: ❤️ :linux:
One of the fun parts of being a #Linux mirror operator is that you get to deal with China Mobile using ISO download mirrors to fix their traffic ratios with other ISPs at peering points.
Looks like they've moved to using Slackware now...
The online backlash to #Windows#Recall amuses me tremendously. I started building a similar open-source (non-AI, local only) thing for #Linux a month ago.
It would take screenshots and create a timeline video of your day. It also enabled searching across your past usage of the computer.
The inspiration was an open-source macOS app called "Rem" which does the same thing.
Ah well, I guess I'll abandon that then, as it's going to be seen as toxic thanks to #Microsoft.
Folks who might be looking to move from Windows to Linux: another option, if it’s financially feasible for you and you don’t want to mess with installing Linux, is to sell your Windows machine and buy a Linux one.
