Looks like the Boring Company's Las Vegas tunnels are going about as well as you'd expect from an Elon project...
"The muck pooling in the tunnel at the north end of the Las Vegas Strip had the consistency of a milkshake and, in some places, sat at least two feet deep. ... At first, it merely felt damp. But in addition to the water, sand and silt—the natural byproducts of any dig—the workers understood that it was full of chemicals known as accelerants.
"The accelerants cure the grout that seals the tunnel’s concrete supports, helping the grout set properly and protecting the work against cracks and other deterioration. They also seriously burn exposed human skin. At the Encore dig site, such burns became almost routine, workers there told Nevada’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration. An investigation by the state OSHA, which Bloomberg Businessweek has obtained via a freedom of information request, describes workers being scarred permanently on their arms and legs. According to the investigation, at least one employee took a direct hit to the face. In an interview with Businessweek, one of the tunnel workers recalls the feeling of exposure to the chemicals: “You’d be like, ‘Why am I on fire?’”"
A wheelchair-user was forced to drag -- literally drag -- himself off an Air Canada flight in Las Vegas when there was no third-party assistance available.
If you think "dragged" is an overstatement, think again: The flight attendant asked him multiple times to disembark; he had to use "the strength of his upper body to pull himself down the airplane aisle, while his wife, held his legs, which cannot move."
We'll return to the same bar near our house that has the game, but this time, I think I'll attempt to listen to the game via #TuneIn while I watch it on a dozen TVs.
Sadly, the #hockey side of the #Fediverse is pretty sparse, so I'll be mainly talking to myself. I'm not sure that the @hockey group is still functioning, so it may be the @TheHockeyWriters and a handful of us fans posting around The Verse.
The latest 5 day rainfall total predictions from #HurricaneHilary
That's a huge swath of land with 2-4 inches of rain predicted - for #LasVegas 4 inches is the average rainfall for an entire year. And given there will be thunderstorms bringing much higher local precipitation rates there will definitely be flash flooding in many areas and quite likely loss of life.
How One Woman Narrowly Avoided a Bad Deal With a “We Buy Ugly Houses” Franchise
Royanne McNair believed she had canceled her contract with a “We Buy Ugly Houses” franchise, so she pursued another offer on her house — this one for $100,000 more.
The 7yo completed another circuit around the sun; will now be referred to as the 8yo for the next ~12 months. I revised my intro post accordingly.
Work trip to #LasVegas was a success! View from my room @ the Bellagio was AWESOME. Hit the tables for a hot minute and left the city up $105.
Went to a #Chicago Wolves minor league #hockey game. The last time I went decades ago, the Allstate Arena where they play was called the Rosemont Horizon.
Besides this project being an affront to actual durable, efficient, green and transformative public transportation, the public safety issues of this system remain largely unresolved in my view - particularly on the evacuation plan in any given stretch of this system, particularly with those with #mobility needs.
If I were a Clark County, #Nevada resident, I would be livid at the hand-waving here.
Rescue crews are searching for a military helicopter with five Marines onboard that went missing en route from #LasVegas to #SanDiego.
CALFIRE SAN DIEGO #firefighters are assisting with search efforts in the area north of Interstate 8 & Kitchen Creek Road, located southeast of #PineValley.
