Hey y'all! so last year on #Juneteenth I started a lil #reparations thread. Some racist assholes took issue with that...
So this year I'll be making multiple threads throughout the month! It's now June where I am so I'm eager to get started.
Black folks, reply w/ your cashapp venmo ko-fi etc etc if you like.
Other folks, (especially if you're benefitting from the federal holiday) throw them coins if you got the means and boost replies in the thread for circulation
#SUSECON is scheduled during #Juneteenth this year, which is unfortunate. I know it's not a German holiday, but I imagine it will impact participation from Americans.
Trump hates #TikTok after a grandmother from Iowa organized teens & KPop fans on TikTok to claim free tickets for his June 2020 rally in Tulsa that was scheduled for #Juneteenth.
His 2020 campaign manager, Brad Parscale, said they got over one million ticket requests for the free event, but the day of the event they didn't even fill the 20,000 seat area! Trump was humiliated & blamed TikTok.
Top story: When Fort Worth activist Opal Lee was invited in 2021 to stand alongside President Joe Biden as he signed the bill making #Juneteenth a federal holiday, “I could’ve done a holy dance,” the 97-year-old told the Texas Observer recently. “But the kids said they didn’t want me twerking.” https://www.texasobserver.org/juneteenth-museum-fort-worth-opal-lee/
Locals in the historic Fort Worth neighborhood were interested in the proposed Juneteenth museum ... but what they really needed was a grocery store, a health clinic and a pharmacy. Architects and civic leaders worked together to make the new site a part of the community.

I made this funny mash up of The Patriot Front & Slim Pickens at turnstiles yesterday, but while The Patriot Front may look dumb here, they're smart at avoiding prosecution for threatening people online & in person.
Today I wrote about the anti-fascist org Task Force Butler that has developed methods, beyond turnstiles, to stop white Nationalist morons.
I esp like their Street Guide, that explains how to protect yourself, while exposing Nazis.
In June I talked to @MattBinder on the Doomed podcast about Patriot Front, the Neo-Nazis group seen in this clip. https://youtu.be/j6GNTO1fIKc?si=uu_mT_8v54-EdfTU
They wear the same hats, khakis & gatherers on their faces when they go to #Pride events, #Juneteenth parades & other #LGBTQ events.
Task Force Butler understands that cops don't want to charge RW extremist groups. So they developed a Guide for #LGBTQ groups dealing with Nazis, cops AND the media who cover the events.
It's brilliant. https://taskforcebutler.org/streetteams

@freemo True. We probably disagree on what gives something meaning; to me, the meaning of something is split 50/50 between the people who made or said the thing, and the people who perceive or experience the thing. There can even be a point in which the original meaning of something is completely overridden by colloquial usage, to the point where origins don’t matter at all (such as the word “gay”), or an event like #Thanksgiving, which was originally intended to celebrate and embrace thankfulness for blessings, became an event for equal parts thankfulness as well as greed. Then you’ve got vocal minorities chiming in on other things, such as saying the #FourthOfJuly is a celebration of fascism or colonialism or some such nonsense, or that #Juneteenth is a celebration of wokeness and #CRT.
Now to you, perhaps you may count original intent as the objective meaning of something, which I suppose with work for you fairly well so long as we remain relatively close to the inception of what we’re talking about. As time goes on though, those sorts of definitions can be overridden and you’re left adhering to archaic understandings of things.
After all, nobody uses what’s now known as the f slur to refer to a bundle anymore. But does that mean that the objective meaning of that word is not a bundle?

Reading this ⬆️ i was wondering how hot it was in #Mecca just now - I don’t really have a sense of “normal” temperatures during the #Haji or indeed of what kind of #ClimateAdaption or #HeatActionPlans are in place for this already, but it’s made me think more about wider social, cultural impact of #ClimateChange - might events like Haji or #Juneteenth in #Houston (where rapper #BigPokey may have died of #Heatstroke during performance) become untenable? #ClimateDiary
On #Juneteenth weekend, Governor Greg Abbott vetoed a new registry that could have improved outcomes for sickle cell disease patients. The bill's sponsor called the move ”petty, bullshit #politics.”’
‘Heat is deadlier than more fearsome-sounding weather events such as hurricanes, floods and tornadoes—combined. “It’s really not even close with any other extreme” ‘
