Are there any good jobs out there where you can show up, do your work, and then just leave when it's done?

The arbitrary 8.5-9 hour workday drives me nuts, because a lot of the time, I really only have 3 or 4 hours worth of work to do. I generally work quickly and I value my time. Can I make a decent living doing something that gives me this kind of flexibility?

I have interviewed 100s of candidates for software engineering positions.

I’ve done take-home tests, in person challenges, pair programming with the candidates.

All of them were awful experiences for me and especially for the candidate.

I can only think of a single instance where a code challenge exposed a poor software engineer and I could definitely have made the same assessment just by talking to them.

Lately I’ve stopped doing any software or mental puzzles.

I don’t do any of that when I interview designers or QA people or HR people, so why would I be particularly toxic towards software engineers during the hiring process?

Instead, I actually read their resumes (which is significantly quicker than doing interviews, asking them to repeat the same information), and then I ask them questions like:

  • Where do you get your tech news?
  • How do you learn about new technologies?
  • What do you most appreciate in your coworkers today?
  • What is a perfect workday like for you?

I specifically avoid trap-style questions like “what is your greatest weakness?” or “why are you leaving your current job?”

I recommend that you make a plan for what you want to learn about the candidate, e.g. “are they good at acquiring new skills?” or “do they share the same values as the team?” and then structure the interview around that.

Be a non-toxic manager. Make your company look good during the interview process. Get better candidates.

I just finished the first part of my story of applying and getting hired at #automattic which to many is a dream workplace that managed to figure out remote work practices two decades ago.

I have seen many stories of the process online but I have not seen anything like mine, which was coloured by negligence, bad management practices and a work culture that does not suit a cornerstone of the #WordPress community.

I'm looking for a Senior Frontend Developer / UX Engineer role somewhere people are put first.

I have over 7 years of experience working in the public and private sector.

Specialisms include accessibility and design system architecture (of note I helped ship the GOV.UK Design System).

I'm passionate about building interfaces that work for real people.

I'm at my best when I'm able to influence design and solve problems.

I am London based but looking for remote friendly or hybrid working, so anywhere works!

Please boost for reach :) :boost_ok:

Okay since this worked really well last time, I have another request for advice. I currently focus on #Unity and try to get as good as it in as many areas as possible in the time I have. The reason for that is that I got a job where I could learn it and get paid for it. Now when looking at job offerings I find larger companies seem to prefer #Unreal. Do I assume correctly that I need to chose one and will then kinda be stuck with it? I don't have time to learn two engines. #gamedev #jobs

Hey y'all! This is a tech job thread! I know this is a tough market, and I want to create visibility for people so that they can get help finding jobs. If you're hiring, let me know!

  • Entry level (especially for people with no prior work experience)
  • Underrepresented folks
  • Nontraditional backgrounds
  • Companies with an ethical mission

Please boost! It means a lot :blobfoxheartcute: ❤️

Where can I look for gamedev (or almost any other dev) jobs?

My main issues are living in a country (Hungary), where a college degree would be almost mandatory for any dev jobs (mainly due to HR being dumb), also I'm disabled so my only job opportunity is a crappy government program one that pays half the minimum wage for full-time employment (!!!!!!), but this is the only no-12 hour...

Need an AI- and automation-proof career? Go into kitchen cabinets. Apparently, finding someone able to do kitchen cabinets is one of the most difficult things, per multiple people I know, my insurance adjuster, and the restoration companies (at least, while people can still pay for kitchens). I've been thinking about doing a little explainer/how-to for youngsters especially, on how to get into the construction business, and how to protect your health while you're in it. (Because those fuckers will ruin your body for $15/hour if you let them.)

There's a few things to discuss, and this is just me brainstorming.

This could be a game-changer for a queer kid in a conservative family who doesn't want to go to college.

Construction workers are DESPERATE for new workers. Some of them are even raising wages (others are hiring cut-rate subcontractors, but that's another story). It's one of the few areas where automation can't take your job for quite a while and you don't need a degree.

The trick is getting in the door and making them think you're going to fit into the culture there. The main thing for getting in the door is showing up and having some tools. Which tools, and how to get them, and how to use them--that's a big topic of conversation.

Not gonna lie: as a woman, I know I lost out on roughly 50% of opportunities compared to a similarly situated man. But it still saved my life when I was in a really dark place.

So yeah, stay tuned for that.

I am truly amazed at the number of applicants I have seen off of this single post. And almost all are well suited candidates worth my time to review. I am astonished that a single post on the fedi is more effective than actually hiring a recruiter. Thank you everyone for the boosts and applications.

While many applicants have made it through and are currently being hired because we have so many positions we have quite a few still available for every level from sr to jr, and both data scientists and programmers. So please keep boosting, sharing, and applying if anyone is interested.

Just a reminder this is 100% remote, no fixed hours, will pay market rates for position. I will be your direct boss and hiring manager (also owner, founder, and inventor of the tech).

Well update on the government side of the job hunt… did a horrid 3-hr exam on Monday in which the person who wrote the job description did not talk to the person who wrote the exam. So that was a fucking amazing stressful waste of time (probably).

Next Monday I get another 2-day exam at 8;30AM and… a 2-hr exam at 9 AM from a difference department the same day. So will get the 2-hr exam out of the way and do the 2-day exam after 😩 #ottawa #jobs

What to do if you're 40 and you've realised you can't stand office work at all because you have , but the only job experience you have is 13 years of being a software engineer?

Add to that the constraint that you can't go to school to re-educate yourself because school is just office work you don't get paid for?

What kind of job can you even get in that situation? I've been thinking about that for 4 years now and I don't have any good answers. 🤷‍♂️

EDIT: I did not respond well to medical ADHD treatment. Bad side effects. Many people get those, but it's not talked about much.
