Java is an interesting language for a Fediverse project because it's the one language with several mature implementations of Semantic Web tech (RDF, SPARQL, etc). JSON-LD just works, out of the box. It was kind of shocking to see Apache Jena do in a few minutes of work what took me weeks in Deno!

And I learned about a piece of the Semantic Web ecosystem I wasn't familiar with before. Have you heard the good word of OWL?

Woot, extended 2 more job offers today, one Jr. and one Sr. I suspect there are at least 3 more people in the pipeline I will be hiring. All from this one post.

That leaves at least 10 out of 15 positions open for anyone still looking for a job!

We also just donated another $5K to our open-source fund. This will go to paying open-source contributors on our projects bounties for completing certain tasks. Very excited by that as well. We are even using it on interviews for code projects so in a sense we are paying people to take interviews with us even if they dont get the job through those bounties. I am getting some interesting reactions with that one.

I wonder if the RDF Wikidata dump is generated from the JSON Wikidata dump or if it s generated directly from the Wikidata database. In the case that the RDF Wikidata dump is generated from the JSON dump, what is the tool using from it?

After discussing how to represent arbitrary dimensionality with some specified dimensions for like 5 hours, @linkml does in fact after 20 some years of the #SemanticWeb have a usable #LinkedData schema construct for specifying arrays. For ur consideration: https://github.com/linkml/linkml-model/pull/181

Pydantic model generator comes tomorrow, schema for specifying encoding comes next week. There shall be content addressed linked data arrays.

I am truly amazed at the number of applicants I have seen off of this single post. And almost all are well suited candidates worth my time to review. I am astonished that a single post on the fedi is more effective than actually hiring a recruiter. Thank you everyone for the boosts and applications.

While many applicants have made it through and are currently being hired because we have so many positions we have quite a few still available for every level from sr to jr, and both data scientists and programmers. So please keep boosting, sharing, and applying if anyone is interested.

Just a reminder this is 100% remote, no fixed hours, will pay market rates for position. I will be your direct boss and hiring manager (also owner, founder, and inventor of the tech).

I recommend the online book "Spatial Linked Data Infrastructures" - https://linked-sdi.com/ - by @luis_de_sousa. It's an excellent resource for understanding Linked Data and the Semantic Web. Even if geospatial topics aren't your focus, you'll find the concepts clearly explained. A must-read for anyone diving into these technologies! #foss4g #linkeddata #semanticweb #geospatial

In the early years of Twitter there were so many cool apps built on geotagged tweets for use cases like disaster mapping. Also many beautiful maps of spatial patterns of social media from creative coders like Erica Fischer.

Gradually, though, people stopped using geotags in Twitter and nothing quite took its place.

But now with @Edent's work to implement "Foursquare on Mastodon" maybe a new geosocial age is dawning?

@alan @Edent personally I would enjoy a indirect geotagging by refering just to wikidata objects as context. To me this looks a bit more like #semanticweb :ablobcatbongo:

I understand some choices made to develop wikibase for wikidata, but it is really not adequat for third parties to use. The hard coding of configuration parameters in 2 steps is cursed though.

@Elendol@hachyderm.io avatar

I spent the day trying to find the best way to work with wikibase to create our own "wikidata", but the data modelling it forces you to do, we can't use external ontologies, I don't want to hardcode some properties IDs in a config file after installation and after addition of data, that doesn't seem right at all. Also no one wants to remember a bunch of Qs and Ps, and that forces people to write some awful code and queries...

For #ActivityPub the question of "Why use #LinkedData?" has never been answered. There should be clear merits to wade through all the complexity that this choice brings, right?

Yes, its ultra flexible, and you can define your own semantic #ontologies, and theoretically it could provide a robust extension mechanism to AP protocol. Except that right now it doesn't.

What's the vision of a Linked Data #Fediverse? What great innovative #SocialNetworking #UX would it bring, that makes it worthwhile?

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@jenniferplusplus

Yes, I think so too. #LinkedData becomes interesting only when you get to the advanced usages of LD. It is not suitable for the minimal case of defining msg formats.

The chicken/egg of the #SemanticWeb is that its glorious magic will only become apparent once the SW exists in all its glory, and the ecosystem tooling and software exists to make it easy for devs to wield the magic wand.
