Tomorrow I am travelling to Crete to attend the #ESWC. Sunday, during the #GeoLD workshop, I will be presenting the #GloSIS web ontology. Also in the #GeoLD I am co-authoring a position paper making the case for a #SemanticWeb standard for #CoordinateSystems.

Git and GitHub are key tools for sharing your work reproducibility and the greater good 🌱 However they are often seen as too 'hardcore' or developer-focussed to be used by researchers and data analysts. That's a misconception! Great vid to get started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Dd7KRpKeaE

That W3C fee for small organisations is way too high.

If an local independent news organisation wanted to be a member it would be a huge chunk of their budget.

Small FOSS projects/consultants who build a chunk of the technology the web uses, chunk of budget.

Higher up the tier? Proportionally chump change.

Next time you wonder who or what is driving web standardisation look at the fees for W3C membership.

You'll get your answer.

luis_de_sousa,
@luis_de_sousa@mastodon.social avatar

@onepict Have you ever tried to join a working group? My experience is quite the opposite. The cost is not the fee, rather the time investment. Most work is conducted by invited experts that pay no fee.

luis_de_sousa,
@luis_de_sousa@mastodon.social avatar

@onepict @dentangle I don't follow. If you can't contribute the time, then what is the point? How would you expect to develop the standard?

luis_de_sousa,
@luis_de_sousa@mastodon.social avatar

@onepict @dentangle I don't get paid. But there might be mechanisms of compensation I am not aware of.

The logic around institutions like the W3C (e.g. OGC, OMG, etc) is for institutions and individuals to contribute according to their means to development. In my case I contribute my time. I would be skeptical of contributing to a standards setting institution paying for involvement (sounds like something ESRI or Microsoft would do).

luis_de_sousa,
@luis_de_sousa@mastodon.social avatar

@onepict @dentangle Sorry, not trying to spam you. But just complementing my point above: the work I have done with the W3C in all resembles my experience with Open Source development. It is a similar paradigm regarding collaboration.

If project longevity is a goal, divsersifying away from a waning language is a must.

luis_de_sousa,
@luis_de_sousa@mastodon.social avatar

@robinlovelace @martinfleis

"Great language" is merely a subjective statement. #R has long dropped outside the top 20 of the most used languages in the world and the trend only points downwards. It is in the bottom half of #StackOverflow 's admiration ranking and scores less than 4% in the desirable ranking. In contrast, recent languages like #Flow, #Julia, #Mojo, etc yield pretty much the opposite dynamics at the moment.

According to @euractiv_global a final #CyberResilienceAct text will be ready already next week. There are good news and bad news. Legislators seem to recognise the nature of #OpenSource as a novel industrial process. However, projects under the umbrella of supporting organisations (e.g. foundations) are still required to comply with parts of the #CRA. To see if the dangerous upstream certification requirement remains.

Indeed that is no solution, the power of the # Fediverse and #ActivityPub is to connect different communities. The software implementing it can be (and is) used in closed communities, but that defeats the purpose.

Vetting accounts (instance wide or in the user level) is part of the game, as it were, since that is outside the scope of the protocol. The freedom it creates also means responsibility for those that use it.

luis_de_sousa,
@luis_de_sousa@mastodon.social avatar

@thisismissem @aredridel @mekkaokereke @Jorsh

Self moderated communities have long existed on the internet. Before the thread based social media there were self governed/moderated community fora. But naturally new model could/should be experimented with.

However, my objection here is with the hint in the original post by @mekkaokereke that somehow the issues he experiences are rooted on #ActivityPub itself. The problem is with the people, not the protocol.
