Our commitment to the fediverse is here to stay.

Today, we launched our new Mastodon instance. It will ensure a privacy-focused space to engage with and get the latest from our Commissioners, departments, and the official voices of the Commission.

We want to thank @Mastodon for stewarding us and helping us make this possible.

Fostering European digital players is vital to our strategy for a stronger .

This is a unique opportunity to grow the community even more. Let's get there!

Delightful 💕 to see that now has an official instance. loves Mastodon, as the image clearly shows.

I hope this love will expand further to not just extend to one microblogging application, but to become a full embrace of the based decentralized environment and technology ecosystems that have formed around its open protocols, such as .

Many thanks to @EDPS for its efforts!

They’re paying people to toot 😬

For the question of "Why use ?" has never been answered. There should be clear merits to wade through all the complexity that this choice brings, right?

Yes, its ultra flexible, and you can define your own semantic , and theoretically it could provide a robust extension mechanism to AP protocol. Except that right now it doesn't.

What's the vision of a Linked Data ? What great innovative would it bring, that makes it worthwhile?

> A social media service isn't composing a specialized meta view of some universal data graph.

That said, I feel its worthwhile to ponder this. Doesn't this assumption relate to a particular notion of what entails?

When I think of I think of any indirect or direct interaction people have online. That's vast scope.

Github for instance is a social network. It happens to offer a CodeForge app, but its domain is Collaborative Software Development.

We're working on https://www.valueflo.ws/ as a vocabulary for economic networks and one of our future target implementations is Activity Pub and the Fediverse. So to the extent that gets some traction, it will be all about interop.

> What great innovative #SocialNetworking #UX would it bring, that makes it worthwhile?

That will be the equivalent of million-dollar ERP systems but for P2P networks of small nodes.

Could be other interesting collaborative apps.

Some people prefer to talk about the "social web" instead of the "fediverse".

If you do, do you just prefer one term over another, or do you think "social web" could emcompass more functionality than what today's fediverse can do?

Curious.

I went on similar thought processes ever since taking notes on major challenges for the fedi, and noting they were all social in nature..

First in traditional "Social Media" there's not much social. The term is hijacked to lure people to exploitative platforms. We have opportunity to , a slogan.

Then we have , which humans do for 1,000's of years, as a source of inspiration of how we can extend it properly online.

How to gain followers: Post incredibly stupid content. It can be funny or just really quite crazy nonsense. It can also be edgy or moody.

It is great to see how many social impact organizations, #journalists and #government institutions are exploring the #Fediverse.

The @EU_Commission with the #EUVoice and #EUVideo pilot started by @EDPS is a shining example.

Recognizing that data sovereignty and open access isn't on walled garden platforms run by billionaires on a whim.

#SocialNetworking, not #SocialMedia are the key to the Internet of Humans.

Imagine a #Peopleverse 🌈

Dear friends of and the , these days mark one year since the first mass migration from Twitter to the Fediverse. Many users arrived in just a few days. Some have stayed, many others got discouraged and left, and a significant percentage decided to make the Fediverse their primary "social" home.

A year later, the platforms have evolved, the communities have expanded, and friendships have increased. Unfortunately, hate speech has also increased (although it was present before), a phenomenon that is always difficult to curb.

Personally, I can say that I have witnessed a "blooming" of the Fediverse. Best wishes to everyone, both old and new users, for a pleasant stay. Remember that the Fediverse is made by everyone and belongs to everyone, so it's the right and duty of each one of us to do our best to make it a pleasant place.

Have a great Sunday!

"People are primarily interested in their interests, and only secondarily interested in the people who produce those digestible interesting things – content... This is not obvious at first, but becomes clear as soon as the content creator person changes (gasp) interests or (worse) opinions or (even worse) political alignment. The relationship is immediately made second whenever the shared interest is threatened."

strypey,

"As Google indexed information on the web and presented it in scrollable lists, it inspired Facebook to index people’s conversations into scrollable lists, represented by what they called the News Feed. Treating people’s conversations as 'news' that are 'fed' is what made Facebook change from social network to social media."

I'm going to start mentioning the well known people who actually engage here, who actually read our posts and reply. Kudos to @hacks4pancakes

I might start mentioning the too, the ones who only come here for followers, who don't want to mix with riffraff like us.

I'll start with the though.

We live in strange times. is actively alienating its users. has blocked its own service to most of Europe. is the opposite of user-friendly. And invitations are as rare as hen’s teeth… Aren’t these supposed to be social networks? 🤔

A lot of accounts appearing on the fediverse, mainly from @Mastodon.Social that are following a lot of people, have few to no followers and zero toots.
This is a classic twitter behaviour to building an account, and it really jars to see it being done on the fediverse which is more social.
I accept that some accounts will have few followers/following when starting out, but at least toot a bit as you build up a following.

I'm just saying: the launch of
@wikipedia
@wikidata
@wikiresearch
nableDev
@wikisusdev
and @mediawiki ...

All that does feel like some big new steps.

So does moving to integrate Mastodon identify verification into software itself.

"The end goal is that I can put e.g. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Legoktm as a URL item and Mastodon will be able to verify it."

I'm going to be watching this VERY closely and supporting it however I can .👀

I had some earlier discussions with @mike_hales @bashrc and @bhaugen that led me to pen down some notes on how I'd like to see and technology to be combined, in what I called "Social Knowledge Fabrics".

https://discuss.coding.social/t/semmy-social-knowledge-fabrics/76

I've since added some more related resources to this topic.

Everywhere I see personal knowledge base software projects pop up. Imho collective knowledge gardening is way to go.

Every hashtag on every post on every platform should ALWAYS be pascal case (a.k.a. camel case). I made this to illustrate how screenreaders read hashtags depending on whether they are lowercase or pascal case.

It’s a small thing that all of us can do to build a more inclusive, accessible internet for all. Please take the time to use pascal case.

The beauty of #Fediverse is that you can do organic #SocialNetworking which is much different than what #Twitter allows you to do.

Twitter is broadcast-type #SocialMedia. It's algorithms 'sell' your engagement with goal to maximize no. of eyeballs glued online, watching #Ads.

Fedi OTOH does none of that. It enables a #Peopleverse to emerge. A social graph of those folks you'd like to hang out with.

Wanna be a broadcaster here? Go ahead. But pls don't be an 'influencer' 🤢 be a person instead!
