Today, we launched our new Mastodon instance. It will ensure a privacy-focused space to engage with and get the latest from our Commissioners, departments, and the official voices of the Commission.
We want to thank @Mastodon for stewarding us and helping us make this possible.
Fostering European digital players is vital to our strategy for a stronger #DigitalEU.
This is a unique opportunity to grow the community even more. Let's get there!
Delightful 💕 to see that #EuropeanCommission now has an official #Mastodon instance. #EC loves Mastodon, as the image clearly shows.
I hope this love will expand further to not just extend to one #FreeSoftware microblogging application, but to become a full embrace of the #OpenStandards based decentralized #SocialNetworking environment and #SocialWeb technology ecosystems that have formed around its open protocols, such as #ActivityPub.
For #ActivityPub the question of "Why use #LinkedData?" has never been answered. There should be clear merits to wade through all the complexity that this choice brings, right?
Yes, its ultra flexible, and you can define your own semantic #ontologies, and theoretically it could provide a robust extension mechanism to AP protocol. Except that right now it doesn't.
What's the vision of a Linked Data #Fediverse? What great innovative #SocialNetworking#UX would it bring, that makes it worthwhile?

We're working on https://www.valueflo.ws/ as a vocabulary for economic networks and one of our future target implementations is Activity Pub and the Fediverse. So to the extent that gets some traction, it will be all about interop.
> What great innovative #SocialNetworking#UX would it bring, that makes it worthwhile?
That will be the equivalent of million-dollar ERP systems but for P2P networks of small nodes.
Some people prefer to talk about the "social web" instead of the "fediverse".
If you do, do you just prefer one term over another, or do you think "social web" could emcompass more functionality than what today's fediverse can do?
First in traditional "Social Media" there's not much social. The term is hijacked to lure people to exploitative platforms. We have opportunity to #ReimagineSocial, a slogan.
Then we have #SocialNetworking, which humans do for 1,000's of years, as a source of inspiration of how we can extend it properly online.
#Nepal bans #TikTok and says it disrupts social harmony.
Well, yes.. how much do corporate #SocialMedia contribute to the unraveling of the social fabric of #society world-wide and erosion of #democracy, by how their algorithms #DoomPush every person by their gut to the next toxic asocial exchange that keeps them online and seeing more #ads?
Now that everyone in Norway 🇳🇴 apparently sees a big old "Accept ads or pay us" screen on Facebook :facebook: I wonder if people will start to look for alternatives and we will see a boost in people coming to oslo.town
Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse, these days mark one year since the first mass migration from Twitter to the Fediverse. Many users arrived in just a few days. Some have stayed, many others got discouraged and left, and a significant percentage decided to make the Fediverse their primary "social" home.
A year later, the platforms have evolved, the communities have expanded, and friendships have increased. Unfortunately, hate speech has also increased (although it was present before), a phenomenon that is always difficult to curb.
Personally, I can say that I have witnessed a "blooming" of the Fediverse. Best wishes to everyone, both old and new users, for a pleasant stay. Remember that the Fediverse is made by everyone and belongs to everyone, so it's the right and duty of each one of us to do our best to make it a pleasant place.
"People are primarily interested in their interests, and only secondarily interested in the people who produce those digestible interesting things – content... This is not obvious at first, but becomes clear as soon as the content creator person changes (gasp) interests or (worse) opinions or (even worse) political alignment. The relationship is immediately made second whenever the shared interest is threatened."
"As Google indexed information on the web and presented it in scrollable lists, it inspired Facebook to index people’s conversations into scrollable lists, represented by what they called the News Feed. Treating people’s conversations as 'news' that are 'fed' is what made Facebook change from social network to social media."
We live in strange times. #Twitter is actively alienating its users. #Threads has blocked its own service to most of Europe. #Mastodon is the opposite of user-friendly. And #BlueSky invitations are as rare as hen’s teeth… Aren’t these supposed to be social networks? 🤔 #socialNetworking#informationSilos
A lot of accounts appearing on the fediverse, mainly from @Mastodon.Social that are following a lot of people, have few to no followers and zero toots.
This is a classic twitter behaviour to building an account, and it really jars to see it being done on the fediverse which is more social.
I accept that some accounts will have few followers/following when starting out, but at least toot a bit as you build up a following. #fediverse#socialnetworking#accounts#users#interaction#community
I had some earlier discussions with @mike_hales@bashrc and @bhaugen that led me to pen down some notes on how I'd like to see #Fediverse#SocialNetworking and #Wiki technology to be combined, in what I called "Social Knowledge Fabrics".
Every hashtag on every post on every platform should ALWAYS be pascal case (a.k.a. camel case). I made this to illustrate how screenreaders read hashtags depending on whether they are lowercase or pascal case.
It’s a small thing that all of us can do to build a more inclusive, accessible internet for all. Please take the time to use pascal case.
