Goodreads: Been a member since 2009 and really liked it back then. Has the most comprehensive functionality for everything I need to organize my stuff. The only problem I see is that recommendations focus immensely on new releases, whereas I prefer to read series that are finished - I hate waiting for the next book in a series. Also has loading issues sometimes, but nothing unbearable. #bookstodon#goodreads
So to summarize, goodreads still has the most functionality, but obviously they sold their soul years ago and now try to shove new releases down your throat. I will continue to use goodreads to organize my reads, but I will probably occasionally check StoryGraph for recommendations (not that I need any, with my to-read shelves having over 60 books)... #bookstodon#goodreads#storygraph#literalclub
Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Kyoto's geishas with "Memoirs of a Geisha," a timeless tale of tradition, beauty, and heartbreaking sacrifice.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The kindle version is on sale for $2.99.
Not being a part of #Amazon is a big plus.
But #Bookwyrm isn’t really up to anything like #goodreads yet, in several points.
The server seems to be unreliable. I ges donating money would help here.
The dataset is a bit of a mess
But also, their seems to be no manual or set-out rules how to fix a lot of the dataset problems.
Still, i have mostly moved my reading there, and instead of #ospalhReads i am tooting reading stuff as @ospalh now.
I’ve been inspired by someone to be more honest and outgoing on this platform. I think I am naturally reticent on social media; and I feel I might be robbing myself of valuable relationships because of it. So here’s me being more #open and #honest.
It nags at me that I don’t interact in as #heartfelt a way as I could on here. My habit of using Mastodon entails checking in on a small group of contacts that I gathered onto a list called “Simpatico”. I do my check in the evening after work. That time of day I feel a little too tired and distracted to #interact much beyond liking and sharing posts. I think I could do better.
By the way. I am “SteeperThanDeep” on #TheStoryGraph. I’m in the process of moving my library from #Goodreads.
I’ve been using Goodreads since 2008. I like keeping track of what books I’ve read, and seeing what some of my friends thought of those books. But I don’t feel great about using an Amazon-owned product. I’d be interested in any thoughts on fediverse book servers, or impressions of Storygraph, for those who have used them? #bookstodon#reading#books#GoodReads#TheStorygraph#StoryGraph
Using the freedom-hating platform #Goodreads, I have learned that I have read more #books 📚 in the first five days of 2024 than I did during all of 2023. Admittedly, that's only two (yes, 2) books so far this year, but it's a good start to my #ReadingChallenge target of twelve.
The problem is that I have so many books on my reading list, it's difficult to know what to read next. And if any of my favoured authors releases a new book in a series I'm following, everything else gets dropped.
Today is the day. I deleted my #goodreads account, which I hadn’t really used for a few years anyway, and joined a UK-based #Bookwyrm instance (@clare_hooley). All painless, including the import of my data, and already federated for my first currently reading (https://ramblingreaders.org/user/clare_hooley/comment/239896). I am likely to want to share statuses directly via url, for people not on fedi, which isn’t the most obvious to get at directly, but easy enough after they come through into mastodon.
As a #BookAddict I can read a #book a day if other life commitments don't get in the way. According to #Goodreads, I read 154 #books in 2023. I may have missed a few books. #bookstodon 📚
This week I've been binge reading series by K J Charles, mostly historical MM Romances with either paranormal elements or spies, mysteries and intrigue. Some with magpies too. 🐦 https://kjcharleswriter.com/books/
I really wish I had been tracking all the books I read since I started high school. I used to read so much back then and it would be amazing to know how many per year I used to manage
been in and out of here lately trying to figure out a real #GoodReads alt after fighting with #OpenLibrary one too many times, and uh didn't know there was actually a Fediverse GR site called #BookWyrm ?? So I've been importing my entire GR library there for the past couple of days :blobcat_cute:
Read number 38 for 2023. I liked this memoir because it is an inside telling of life as President with a refreshing honesty and without rancor. Looking forward to volume 2. A four cup review ☕☕☕☕ #barackobama#memoir@bookstodon#bookstodon#goodreads#Bookwyrm
I like the idea of an open anti-corporate web site for a reading community to replace #goodreads but #bookwyrm isn't there yet. A quick book search finds lots of gaps, esp. Australian titles.
The #Goodreads Reader's Choice Award is pointless, because it maps directly how many people have read a book. In order for it to have any validity, you would need to include only books with at least a thousand ratings and simply give the prize to the book with the highest average.
This reader has decided to stay on #Goodreads for now, but this does suggest that it is becoming yet another example of why we cannot have nice things on the web.
In fairness, I have not seen much of the things described myself. It probably depends on what kind of books you read. I do not really read new YA fiction, for example. (I sometimes buy it as presents, though.)

Another article about review bombing? I personally haven't noticed anything like that on #GoodReads either. I am more annoyed by poor functionality of their apps. Not enough reason to leave, though.
