I've been using my #framework laptop with #popos for about four months, but honestly I really missed #macbookpro and went back. Not just because of the great battery life and #macos, but mostly because of the eco system and the apps that are available. I really missed #arcbrowser and #raycast and I feel much more productive and at home again. Anyone else who finds it hard to move from #macos to #linux?
@CenturyAvocado yes of course! I really did try and work on #linux and look for (preferably #opensource) alternatives, because I love the idea behind #framework. But it usually just doesn't work as good as I would like or it just takes a lot of effort and tinkering and that gets me out of my flow. They are very expensive machines and while it is good hardware (with a few flawed iterations) when they break it's hard to repair.
@elkannixed I keep #macOS around for the excellent #Affinity apps by Serif…and that’s about it. Since switching to #Linux, I find macOS to be clunky, slow, restrictive, and more prone to app freezes and crashes - especially since Big Sur. Linux on those very same Macs has been a much better experience.
Additionally, I refuse to purchase any new Apple hardware since they have become non-upgradeable and non-serviceable appliances. #Framework will be my new laptop.
If you were to write a web application from scratch (frontend and backend, minimal/uncomplex business logic) - what #programming language or #framework#stack would you chose and why?
(please boost for visibility, there are no wrong answers, just curious)
..but I pushed pause because, while my inbox is rocking, I don't have my #ActivityPub outbox set up to process from a queue yet (it's still sending love). 😞 So back to unsexy "proper #code logic" for a bit..
..still confident I'll be following a few folks by Sunday tho - ugly test attached! 😆
I have a kid headed off to college who wants a @frameworkcomputer DIY 13" system to run @fedora on while studying CS. ❤️
What are the tradeoffs between the Intel and AMD variants, specifically for running Linux, specifically the next-generation systems (13th Gen Intel Core or AMD Ryzen 7040 Series) currently available for pre-order?
Webcam? (I don't know whether Frame.work are using Intel's proprietary, closed-source, non-upstreamed webcam implementation on their Alder/Raptor Lake systems.)
Battery life?
Performance?
Other technical considerations?
JTBC I'm not looking for anti-Intel or anti-AMD comments, just technical information, with a focus on good support from a fully open source install.
Going to formally follow some accounts with my homegrown #fediverse app this week!
Been focused on building out the #database / blob storage properly, capturing and authenticating #activitypub messages I receive and updating my homegrown #python#framework (I'm referring to as #Jenkwerx)
I'm FINALLY at a point we're I am allowing myself to formally log in, which means I can automate activities instead of faking them
Really excited to build out some fedi ideas for my online #game and beyond!
@lornajane I moved to Fedora for my #Framework laptop, and apart from re-learning the RPM-based system (over APT/Debian, which I otherwise use across all of my Pis), it has been a nice experience so far. Interested to see them heading containerised in Silverblue, though.
@lynfox I'm using Debian/APT everywhere else via Raspberry Pi OS, but switched over to Fedora on my #Framework. I do have an Ubuntu image still on a previous-gen HP laptop, but I rarely use that right now.
I’ve written down most of what I’ve learned about xcframeworks into this blog post. I hope it can be a one-stop shop to answer all your practical questions, including:
I got in a preorder (?) of the new Framework 13 (Ryzen). Watching all these fantastic reviews has me like a kid on a road trip. Is it Q3 yet!? Is it Q3 yet!? Is it Q3 yet!? Is it Q3 yet!? Is it Q3 yet!? Is it Q3 yet!?...
IDK if it's psychological or real but it's like my 2nd gen HP Spectre x360 knows and has started getting crankier about it. Seems like more creakes, shorter battery life and weird key noises all of a sudden.
@arstechnica I have a 12th gen Intel-based #Framework, and I love it. My one gripe might be a wish for longer battery life, but it actually works for my purposes. Coworkers were curious, so I brought it into work, showed it operating, and quickly popped it open to show the easy access to components. I felt like an unofficial salesman, because several coworkers (all IT and engineering) said now they were interested in getting one. @frameworkcomputer #computers#rightToRepair#right2Repair
Similarly, most #developers now only have to learn how to add units to #frameworks without the overhead of lots of conscious choices. And most businesses only need that.
But some applications will always need more than a #framework and some business logic glue #code. And some businesses will always need truckers.
After a few arduous months of getting the JokeBot #framework off the ground, I have finally got the framework core polished and ready for wider adoption. The #mastodon adapter will enter its release candidate phase and become stable (hopefully) later today, and the #misskey adapter will enter development afterwards.
I cannot thank @benjaminhollon enough for reigniting my love of the terminal. And poetry. But as far as the terminal goes, he introduced me to #aerc, #gpg, #pass, #restic via BorgBase, #qutebrowser. Did I leave anything out? Oh, #asahilinux and #framework PCs, which are environmentally friendly.
I created an account on botsin.space to showcase a framework I made, also called JokeBot, for posting #jokes on the fediverse; I originally posted jokes on my current account, but it was posting a bit too "loudly." Hence, that's why @JokeBot is here.
@JokeBot is currently fully operational; I already boosted its first post, and I will continue to boost its posts for my existing followers to see them.
I have a #big#announcement: I am accepting #contributions to JokeBot! I added support for making JokeBot translatable into other #languages, and I need some help translating JokeBot into as many languages as possible, so it can be used by non-English speakers. If you would like to contribute, please see the contributing guidelines; you will see a section linking to a localization guide in these guidelines. Also, please make sure that you open an issue before you open a PR, so others will know that a #translation is a work in progress.
