Big announcement from Cambridge University as it halts donations💰from #FossilFuel groups🛑
“Accepting funding validates the industry at a time when it is threatening the future viability of life on earth, inc by developing new #oil & #gas infrastructure" https://buff.ly/3Vj6nBX
#Methane a potent greenhouse gas, contributes to roughly 30% of global warming since pre-industrial levels. Human-related sources, mainly agriculture and the #FossilFuel sector contribute to 60% of its emissions.
The IEA suggests that rapid cuts in methane emissions could prevent up to 0.1°C of warming by mid-century.
This may seem small, but in the context of #climatechange could have impacts on ecosystems, sea levels and extreme weather events.
Despite its push for renewable energy, the UK govt announced it was granting 100 oil & gas production licences for the North Sea. But the CCC says expansion of #FossilFuel production "is not in line with #NetZero" https://buff.ly/3a0wuEW
Relying on optimistic techno-economic assumptions, the UK govt’s #CCUS strategy is still based on outdated & unrealistic assumptions, which risk locking consumers in high-cost, #FossilFuel - based futures, our latest report warns https://buff.ly/4caDUUR
The #oil🛢️industry has fought against govt support for clean technologies for more than half a century, the Guardian can reveal, even as vast subsidies have propped up its polluting #FossilFuel business model https://buff.ly/3IszECq#lobbying
"Kenner documented dozens of examples of the oil industry pressuring governments to hold back support for renewable energy, restrict funding for the development of clean technologies and weaken environmental rules that favoured their uptake."
Why isn’t Exxon (and Chevron and the rest) leading the charge to renewable energy? Because the sun and the wind deliver the energy for free, and all you need is some equipment to turn it into electrons. But Exxon controls the molecules—that’s what oil and gas reserves are. And that control means they can make outsize profits—as long as they can persuade the world to keep burning stuff. #energy#fossilfuel#climate https://billmckibben.substack.com?utm_source=navbar&utm_medium=web&r=27ssa
Australians are missing out on a fair share of revenue while #fossilfuel companies are making record profits and worsening the #climatecrisis.
The fact is the Australian government collects more money from students paying #HECS than it does from #gas companies paying the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT).
The Petroleum Resource Rent Tax is broken. #auspol
Govt of Canada has "some of the most stringent regulations w/ ambitions to cut methane leaked and emitted by oil & gas production by up to 75%, from 2012 levels, by 2030"
MethaneSAT's mission: to fill "critical data gap" in identifying potent GHG. Able to identify, quantify and attribute #fossilfuel field emission for 80% of global production sites.
#Methane is:
🔺 "wildly underreported" by some provinces
🔺 80x more harmful than CO2
"Given the spiralling costs of deadly heatwaves, droughts and rising sea levels, the new #ClimateFinance target is expected to be far larger than the existing U.N. commitment of rich countries to spend $100 billion per year from 2020, a target they failed to meet on time.
A draft statement for a meeting of #EU foreign ministers later this month showed the 27-nation country bloc will argue the oil and gas sector should also contribute."
Unable and/or unwilling to cough up even the inadequate $100 bn a year in #ClimateFinance to developing countries, now EU countries are pointing their finger at the #FossilFuel industry and saying the polluter needs to pay.
Last year Big Oil and Gas made over $300 bn in profit by wrecking the planet, so it's not unreasonable that they be asked to pay for adaptation and resilience building in poor countries.
#FossilFuel companies continue to reward executives for increasing output of #oil & #gas, despite their public pledges to slash production & support climate goals https://buff.ly/3TfZO1l
‘Blue’ Hydrogen Could Produce 50% More Warming than Burning Fossil Fuels
"[Canada] “is betting big on #BlueHydrogen, a fossil fuel-derived chemical masquerading as an energy solution."
This research should finally lay to rest the unfounded hope that creating incentives for fossil #hydrogen production in Canada is any kind of solution for the climate, or for economic development.”
@CelloMomOnCars the cost of adding CCS to just doesn’t look to be sensible. The process to create blue hydrogen costs energy and CCS also costs energy just as it does to all those fossil fuel using industrial processes then more energy is needed/wasted. It all seems counterintuitive and that green hydrogen would be a better solution. Must be a billionaire or two in there wanting it. #ccs#fossilfuel#bluehydrogen
